Product description

About this product

1.44 kg for a two-person double-wall tent, the lightest way we sell to put two people under a proper fly.

The Star River UL is the lighter sibling of the Mongar, and the numbers are the argument: 1.44 kg minimum, 1.62 kg with every stake, guy line and bag in the package. Ninety grams under the Mongar, and it packs into a 13 cm cylinder rather than 15 cm, which is the difference between fitting inside a pack and being strapped to the outside of it.

Nothing structural was given up to get there. It is still double wall: a 15D silicone-coated nylon ripstop fly over a full 15D mesh inner, with an air gap so condensation forms on the fly and runs down the outside. The floor is 210T polyester ripstop at PU5000mm+, five times the rating of the fly, because the ground is what actually punishes a tent.

Two doors and two vestibules means each person steps out of their own side and keeps their own pack under cover. The poles are a one-piece Yuksom UL 8.5 mm aluminium set, and a footprint is in the box rather than an upsell.

Inner floor is 210 x 130 cm with 105 cm of headroom; the fly covers 220 x 245 cm, so the vestibules are real rather than token.

Questions

Good to know

How does this compare to the Mongar UL?

Both are 2-person double-wall tents with two doors and two vestibules on 8.5 mm Yuksom poles, and both have the same 210 x 130 cm inner. The Star River is 90 g lighter (1.44 kg against 1.53 kg) and packs smaller, 13 cm across instead of 15 cm. The Mongar uses a 20D nylon inner where this uses full 15D mesh, so the Star River breathes better in heat and the Mongar holds a little more warmth. Here, breathing better usually wins.

Is 1.44 kg the weight I actually carry?

That is the minimum: fly, inner and poles. With stakes, guy lines, footprint and the three storage bags it is 1.62 kg. Split between two people that is about 800 g each.

Why is the floor rated so much higher than the fly?

The fly is PU1500mm+ and the floor PU5000mm+, and that is deliberate. Rain runs off a sloped fly, but a groundsheet sits in whatever water is under you with your body weight pressing it down. Hydrostatic pressure on the floor is far higher than on the roof, which is why every good tent rates it higher.

A full mesh inner, is that cold?

On the coast and at low altitude it is exactly what you want: air moves through and you sleep instead of sweating. At altitude on Kilimanjaro approaches it is cooler than a solid nylon inner, so bring the sleeping bag rating up rather than expecting the tent to hold heat.

Two doors on a tent this light, why?

With one door the person inside climbs over the other every night, and both packs share one vestibule. Two doors gives each person their own exit and their own covered storage. At 1.44 kg, keeping both is the achievement.

Is 15D fabric too fragile?

Strong for its weight, unforgiving of carelessness. Clear stones and thorns before pitching, always use the included footprint, and never drag it. Treated properly it lasts seasons.

How do I look after it?

Never store it damp, even overnight. Dry both layers fully, especially after coastal trips. Sponge with cool water and mild soap, never machine wash or use detergent, which strips the silicone and PU coatings. Store loose in a dry bag rather than compressed in the stuff sack.
