Highlights

A 20 cm back brim, because that is where you burn

Most hats protect your face and leave the back of your neck to it. This one covers both, and weighs 84 g doing it.

UPF 50+

Blocks over 98 percent of ultraviolet. Near the equator that is not a seasonal concern - the UV index in Tanzania stays high all year.

20 cm back brim

Proper coverage for the back of the neck and ears, which is where most people actually burn on a day outdoors.

Moisture wicking

Nylon and spandex that moves sweat away instead of holding it against your forehead in the heat.

Crush and recover

Fold it into a bag and it comes out its own shape again, which is what separates a travel hat from one you stop packing.

Product description

About this product

Sun protection in Tanzania is a year-round concern rather than a seasonal one. Sitting close to the equator, the UV index here runs high through every month, and a hat is the single most effective thing most people can do about it – it does not wash off, sweat off, or need reapplying every two hours.

This one is built around coverage. The front brim is 9.5 cm, enough to shade the face, and the back brim runs to 20 cm, which is the part that matters most: the back of the neck and the ears are where people who wear caps consistently burn. The fabric is 89 percent nylon and 11 percent spandex with a UPF 50+ rating, blocking over 98 percent of ultraviolet, and it wicks moisture so sweat moves away rather than sitting against your forehead.

At about 84 g it barely registers on your head, and it recovers its shape after being folded or compressed – so it goes into a daypack or a suitcase and comes out wearable, which is what separates a hat you take with you from one that stays at home.

It comes in two sizes: medium at 58 cm cap circumference and large at 60 cm, both with the same brim dimensions and an 11 cm cap depth. It suits hiking, fishing, camping, safari, beach days and gardening. Message us about which sizes and colours are currently in the Dar es Salaam showroom.

Questions

Good to know

What does UPF 50+ actually mean?

It means the fabric lets through less than one fiftieth of the ultraviolet reaching it - over 98 percent blocked. Tanzania sits near the equator, so the UV index here runs high all year, not just in the middle of the day or in the hot months. Fabric protection does not wear off or wash away the way sunscreen does.

Which size should I choose?

Measure around your head just above the ears. Up to about 58 cm take the medium, above that the large. Both have the same brim dimensions, so the only difference is fit.

Will it survive being packed in a bag?

Yes, that is one of its design points. It recovers its shape after being folded or compressed, so it comes out of a daypack or suitcase wearable rather than bent.

Is it hot to wear in Dar es Salaam?

Less than you would expect. The fabric is light and wicks moisture, and the shade it creates makes more difference than the layer it adds. Most people find it cooler than going bare-headed in direct sun.

Does the back brim get in the way?

It hangs down rather than sticking out, so it sits against the back of the neck. In a strong wind it moves, which is what the adjustable fit is there to manage.

Can I wash it?

Hand wash in cool water and let it dry naturally in shade. Avoid hot water and direct sun drying, both of which shorten the life of stretch fabrics.

Is the UPF rating affected by washing?

Fabric-based UPF comes from the weave and the fibre rather than a coating, so normal washing does not remove it. That is its advantage over sunscreen.

What colours does it come in?

Naturehike list this model in green. Stock rotates, so message us and we will tell you what is on the shelf in Dar es Salaam.

Where do these figures come from?

The measurements and weights on this page come from the supplier's own documentation rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. If a particular figure matters to you, ask us and we will check the item in the Dar es Salaam showroom before you buy.
