The fabric is 89 percent nylon and 11 percent spandex with a UPF 50+ rating, blocking over 98 percent of ultraviolet, and it wicks moisture so sweat moves away rather than sitting against your forehead.

What does UPF 50+ actually mean?

It means the fabric lets through less than one fiftieth of the ultraviolet reaching it - over 98 percent blocked. Tanzania sits near the equator, so the UV index here runs high all year, not just in the middle of the day or in the hot months. Fabric protection does not wear off or wash away the way sunscreen does.

Which size should I choose?

Measure around your head just above the ears. Up to about 58 cm take the medium, above that the large. Both have the same brim dimensions, so the only difference is fit.

Will it survive being packed in a bag?

Yes, that is one of its design points. It recovers its shape after being folded or compressed, so it comes out of a daypack or suitcase wearable rather than bent.

Is it hot to wear in Dar es Salaam?
