Highlights

Covers you and the pack at the same time

A rain jacket leaves your bag soaking. A poncho drapes over both, and packs down to a pouch you can hold in one hand.

Covers your backpack too

The one thing a rain jacket cannot do. Everything you are carrying stays dry under the same sheet.

Packs to a hand-sized pouch

Small enough to live permanently in a daypack, a glovebox or a motorcycle pannier for the afternoon it is needed.

Press studs down each side

Close it up and it holds its shape in wind instead of flapping like a sheet - the difference between a poncho and a bin bag.

Opens flat

Unstud the sides and it becomes a groundsheet, a tarp over gear or emergency cover, which no jacket will ever do.

Product description

About this product

A Tanzanian downpour does not negotiate. In the long rains it arrives in minutes and soaks everything that is not covered, and a rain jacket only covers you – your backpack, with your phone, documents and camera in it, gets the full weight of it.

A poncho solves that in the simplest possible way: a single sheet with a hood, draped over you and whatever you are carrying. It is roomy enough to walk in, hooded, and closed with press studs down each side so that it holds its shape rather than flapping loose in the wind, which is the difference between a proper poncho and a sheet of plastic.

Packed, it goes into its own pouch about the size of a sandwich – small enough to sit permanently in a daypack, a glovebox, a boda box or a pannier. That is the whole point: you never decide in the morning whether to bring it, because it is already there.

Undo the studs and it opens right out flat, which gives you a groundsheet to sit on, a cover to throw over gear in the back of a pickup, or emergency shelter in a place with none. It suits hiking, camping, commuting, market days, festivals and the school run, and it fits most adults.

Questions

Good to know

Will it cover my backpack?

Yes, that is the main reason to choose a poncho over a rain jacket. It drapes over you and the pack together, so what you are carrying stays dry as well.

How small does it pack?

Into a pouch roughly the size of a sandwich, which is small enough to live in a daypack, a glovebox or a motorcycle pannier and be forgotten about until it rains.

Is it reusable or disposable?

Reusable. It is a proper poncho with press studs and a hood, not a single-use sheet. Let it dry before packing it away and it will last many seasons.

Will it stay on in wind?

The press studs down the sides close it into a shape rather than leaving it loose, which handles normal wind. In a real gale any poncho will flap - that is the nature of the design.

Can I ride a motorcycle in it?

For a short distance at low speed, some people do, but a loose poncho and a moving wheel is a genuine risk. A fitted rain jacket is the safer choice on a bike.

Can I use it as a groundsheet?

Yes - undo the studs and it opens flat. That doubles as a sit mat, a cover over gear in a pickup, or emergency shelter.

How do I clean it?

Rinse it with fresh water, hang it to dry fully, and only then pack it. Packing a wet poncho is what causes the musty smell people complain about.

Does one size fit everyone?

It is cut generously to fit most adults over normal clothing and a daypack. Try one in the Dar es Salaam showroom if you want to check the length.
