DHS D40+ 2-Star Table Tennis Balls

Balls

DHS D40+ 2-star balls - celluloid-free ABS, 40 mm and 2.7 g. A practice grade: the ITTF sets no specification for one and two star balls, so these are not for sanctioned matches. For most table tennis, which is practice, they are exactly right.

The modern 40+ plastic ball, in the more durable second-generation ABS material.

A practice grade

Right for drilling

Multiball training gets through balls fast. This is what the lower grades exist for.

Product description

About this product

Star Table Tennis Balls – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

DHS D40+ balls at the 2-star grade – a step up from the one-star: tighter tolerances, and what clubs and coaches generally use for regular practice.

D40+ is DHS’s celluloid-free ABS ball, branded Cell-Free. That matters historically: table tennis moved off celluloid from July 2014, largely because celluloid is highly flammable and increasingly restricted for shipping and storage. The plastic balls that replaced it are marked 40+ to distinguish them, bounce a little higher, travel slightly faster and take noticeably less spin than the old celluloid ball.

The first generation of plastic balls had real problems – cracking, going out of round, inconsistent seams. Second-generation ABS balls, from around 2016, largely solved that, and these are ABS.

On the star grade, we want to be accurate rather than flattering. Stars are a manufacturer’s quality grade covering roundness, wall thickness, hardness and bounce consistency. The ITTF sets no specification at all for one- and two-star balls, and only three-star balls appear on their approved list. So a 2-star ball is a practice ball, graded entirely by DHS, and it is not legal for sanctioned competition.

That is not a criticism. Most table tennis anywhere is practice, and multiball drilling gets through balls at a rate that makes match-grade balls an expensive way to train. For a match, ask us about the DJ40+.

Questions

Good to know

What do the stars mean on a ball?

A quality grade set by the maker: roundness, wall thickness consistency, hardness and bounce consistency. One star is a training ball, two stars a practice ball, three stars the match grade. The ITTF sets no specification at all for one and two star balls - only three star balls appear on the approved list. Anything advertised above three stars is marketing; three is the top grade that exists.

What does ITTF approved actually mean?

That a specific brand and model has been measured against the ITTF specification and added to their published approved list, and is licensed to carry the ITTF logo. It is granted to a named product, not to a category - so an unbranded ball cannot be ITTF approved no matter what the packet says. For sanctioned matches, look for the brand, 40+, three stars and the ITTF logo together.

What is a 40+ ball?

The modern plastic ball. Table tennis moved off celluloid from July 2014, mainly because celluloid is highly flammable and increasingly restricted for shipping and storage. Plastic balls are made to a slightly wider tolerance window and marked 40+ to distinguish them. They bounce a little higher, travel slightly faster and take noticeably less spin than the old celluloid ball.

Can I use these in a match?

Not a sanctioned one. The ITTF sets no specification for one and two star balls at all, and only three-star balls appear on the approved list. These are training and practice balls - which is exactly what most table tennis needs. For a match, ask us about the DJ40+.

How many balls should I buy?

More than you think, if you are drilling. Multiball training - a coach feeding ball after ball - needs dozens at a time, which is what the lower star grades exist for. For casual play, a handful lasts a long while.

Do plastic balls crack?

The first generation of plastic balls did, badly. Second-generation ABS balls from 2016 onward are markedly more durable and rounder, and complaints largely stopped. These are ABS balls.

What are the official table dimensions?

The ITTF specify a playing surface 2.74 m long by 1.525 m wide, 76 cm above the floor. The net is 15.25 cm high along its whole length, suspended from posts whose outside edges sit 15.25 cm beyond each side line - which is why a regulation net spans 1.83 m, or 72 inches. The ball is 40 mm across and weighs 2.7 g.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. A table is a bulky item, so tell us when you order and we will arrange the right transport.
