DHS R2003 Table Tennis Racket - 2 Star

Rackets

DHS R2003, a two-star all-round bat - and importantly, a combination bat: long pips one side, tacky inverted the other. Long pips return your opponent's spin back at them, which is a real weapon for a disruptive player and an obstacle for someone still learning to loop.

Highlights

A combination bat, not a normal one

Long pips one side. That changes who should buy it.

Long pips plus inverted

DHS C7 long pips one side, tacky PF4-1 inverted the other. A disruption bat.

Reversal is the point

Long pips send your opponent's own spin back at them - topspin returns as backspin.

Not a beginner's bat

You cannot build a looping game on a rubber designed not to grip. Ask us for inverted both sides.

DHS call it all-round

Not an attacking bat, whatever other listings say. This is DHS's own classification.

Product description

About this product

Table Tennis Racket – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

DHS classify the R2003 as an all-round bat, and it is a combination bat – long pips on one side, inverted rubber on the other. That is the most important thing on this page, because it is not obvious from the outside and it changes who should buy it.

DHS’s own description of the two-star tier: the thickened structure optimises the good control and high speed of the one-star bats, and the classical sticky rubbers improve the loop. The rubbers are DHS PF4-1, a tacky inverted, and DHS C7, a long pips.

What long pips does is reversal. The pimples are tall and thin and bend on contact, so they return the opponent’s own spin back at them – their heavy topspin arrives back as backspin. Played by someone who understands it, that is deeply awkward to face. Played by someone learning the game, it is an obstacle, because you cannot develop a looping stroke on a rubber built not to grip the ball.

So: a genuinely effective bat for a defensive or disruptive player, and the wrong choice for a beginner. If you are starting out, ask us for inverted rubber on both sides – we stock those too.

One thing we are not stating: a sponge thickness. DHS do not publish one for this bat and figures circulating elsewhere are not consistent with a long-pips side, which typically runs under a millimetre.

Buying a Table Tennis Racket in Tanzania

Every table tennis racket is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Spare parts and replacements for the table tennis racket are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

What do the stars mean on a racket?

They are the manufacturer's own tier within their own ready-made range, and nothing more. They are not an ITTF rating and they do not compare between brands - a 6-star STIGA and a 6-star DHS are different scales. More stars means a better blade and better rubbers, and usually a faster, less forgiving bat. STIGA put it well themselves: more stars mean a better bat, but also one that is more difficult to play with.

What is the difference between pips-in and pips-out rubber?

Every rubber is a sheet of pimples on a sponge - the only difference is which way they face. Pips-in, or inverted, has the pimples glued inward so the smooth side meets the ball: maximum friction, maximum spin, and what almost every player should use. Pips-out has the pimples facing outward, so far less of the surface touches the ball: much less spin generated, but also much less of the opponent's spin absorbed, which is the point.

Should a beginner use long pips?

No. Long pips are tall, thin pimples that bend on contact and return the opponent's own spin back at them - heavy topspin comes back as backspin. They are a genuinely effective disruptive tool for a chopper or a defensive blocker, and a poor way to learn table tennis, because you cannot develop a looping game with a rubber designed not to grip. Learn on inverted rubber both sides.

Is this a good bat to learn on?

Honestly, not the best one. A combination bat with long pips on one side is a disruptive tool rather than a teaching one - you cannot build a looping game on a rubber designed not to grip. If you are learning, ask us for a bat with inverted rubber on both sides. If you already play and want to frustrate opponents, this is exactly the bat for it.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Better than you would need to elsewhere. Heat roughly doubles the rate at which rubber oxidises for every ten degrees, so a bat that lasts a year in a European club can be dead in months here. Never leave one in a parked car. Use protective film on both rubbers after every session and keep it in a case - that single habit does more than anything else. Clean with a proper rubber cleaner or a damp microfibre cloth, never with detergent or solvent, and let it dry fully before sealing it away.

When do rubbers need replacing?

When the topsheet stops gripping - roll a ball across it and see whether it catches or slides. Other signs: loops produce visibly less spin, balls fly long on strokes that used to land deep, the surface looks matt and pale where it was glossy, or the edges are lifting. A player training five hours a week replaces every two to four months; a club player every six to twelve; a casual player when the symptoms show. In Dar heat, expect the shorter end of each range.

What are the official table dimensions?

The ITTF specify a playing surface 2.74 m long by 1.525 m wide, 76 cm above the floor. The net is 15.25 cm high along its whole length, suspended from posts whose outside edges sit 15.25 cm beyond each side line - which is why a regulation net spans 1.83 m, or 72 inches. The ball is 40 mm across and weighs 2.7 g.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. A table is a bulky item, so tell us when you order and we will arrange the right transport.
