Product description

About this product

Pickleballs for practice, drilling and social play.

We want to be straight about the naming. Professional Competition is descriptive packaging text rather than a brand or a model, and we have not been able to tie these balls to any manufacturer or to the USA Pickleball approved list. So we are not making a tournament approval claim, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does on a ball with no brand on it.

That is not a reason to avoid them. Most pickleball played anywhere is practice and social play, and a ball that flies true and lasts is all that needs. It is a reason to buy an approved ball – the Franklin X-40 or the JOOLA Primo, both of which we stock – if you are entering a sanctioned event.

For reference, USA Pickleball’s specification for any regulation ball is 2.87 to 2.97 inches in diameter, 0.78 to 0.935 oz, between 26 and 40 circular holes, and a hardness of 40 to 50 on the shore D scale.

Ask us to confirm the hole count and colour against the actual stock before you order.

Pickleball, not padel – the two sports are unrelated.

Questions

Good to know

Indoor or outdoor pickleballs - what is the difference?

Indoor balls have larger holes, usually 26 of them, and a softer, lighter plastic. They are quieter, slower, and easier to control on a smooth gym floor. Outdoor balls have smaller holes, usually 40, and a harder plastic, because an outdoor ball has to hold its line in wind and survive a rough court. Use an outdoor ball outdoors - an indoor ball cracks quickly on a hard court.

Is it approved for tournament play?

We make no approval claim for these. USA Pickleball approval is granted to a named brand and model on a published list, and these are not on it as far as we can establish. For sanctioned play, buy an approved ball - we stock the Franklin X-40 and the JOOLA Primo.

What makes a ball regulation size?

USA Pickleball specify a diameter of 2.87 to 2.97 inches, a weight of 0.78 to 0.935 oz, between 26 and 40 circular holes, and a hardness of 40 to 50 on the D scale. Any ball inside those numbers is regulation size, whether or not it is on the approved list.

What size is a pickleball court?

Twenty feet by forty-four feet, which is the same footprint as a doubles badminton court - 6.10 by 13.41 metres. The net is 36 inches high at the posts and 34 inches at the centre. The non-volley zone, the kitchen, extends seven feet back from the net on each side.

Is padel the same as pickleball?

No, they are different sports and the equipment is not interchangeable. Padel is played on an enclosed 20 by 10 metre court with glass walls that are in play, using a solid perforated racket and a depressurised tennis-type ball. Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized open court with a flat unperforated paddle and a rigid plastic ball with holes in it. A padel racket is too heavy for pickleball and a pickleball paddle cannot play a wall.

How long do pickleballs last?

Until they crack or go out of round. On an abrasive outdoor court that can be a handful of hard sessions. A ball that has gone slightly oval no longer flies true and is worth replacing rather than persevering with - you will start adjusting your stroke for the ball.

What does core thickness change on a pickleball paddle?

A thinner core - 13 or 14 mm - is stiffer, so more energy comes back as ball speed. It hits harder and feels more direct, at the cost of touch. A thicker core - 16 mm - deforms more on impact, which absorbs energy and gives a softer, more controlled feel with better dwell time for dinks and resets. Power players tend to 14 mm, control players to 16 mm.
