About this product
This is a single adjustable dumbbell – one handle, plates and collars – sold on its own rather than as a pair.
Selling them singly is more useful than it sounds. A great deal of worthwhile training is done with one dumbbell: single-arm rows, suitcase carries, single-arm overhead presses, Turkish get-ups, offset squats. Loading one side of the body forces the trunk to resist the twist, which is core work you do not get from two matched weights.
It also lets you build up rather than buy a set. One dumbbell is enough to start; add a second when you want to press with both hands; add plates when the top weight gets easy. That is a more sensible way to spend money than a boxed set chosen by somebody who does not know how you train.
Adjustable rather than fixed is the right choice for a home, for the usual reasons: one handle covers the range that would need five or six fixed dumbbells, and it stores in a fraction of the space. The cost is the thirty seconds it takes to change plates, which only matters if you train in circuits.
Use the collars. Every time, and check them between sets. A plate sliding off mid-press tips the bar instantly and the other end comes down hard – the commonest injury with adjustable dumbbells and completely preventable.
