DHS R3004 Table Tennis Racket - 3 Star

Rackets

DHS R3004, three-star, on five plies of pure imported wood. A combination bat with special short pips one side and inverted the other - short pips being the fast, flat, spin-killing attacking rubber, not the defensive long pips found on the R2003 and R4003.

Highlights

Short pips, not long

An attacking disruption rubber, not a defensive one.

Five-ply pure wood

All-wood construction - more forgiving and more feel than carbon, in the standard balanced build.

Short pips one side

Fast, flat and direct. Kills incoming topspin and returns the ball low and hard.

Quick-attack with loop

DHS's own classification. This is a hitter's bat for playing close to the table.

Inverted on the other side

So you still have a spin-generating surface when you need one.

About this product

Table Tennis Racket – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

DHS build the R3004 on five plies of pure imported wood and describe the three-star tier in their own words: good speed, nice balance and great power, helping a player switch between attack and defence technically. They classify its playing style as quick-attack with loop.

It is a combination bat, but a more approachable one than the R2003 or R4003. One side carries special short pips – DHS list it as Out (Special) – and the other inverted rubber.

Short pips are a different animal from long pips. Where long pips reverse spin and are a defensive disruption tool, short pips are squat and wide: fast, flat and direct. They kill an opponent’s topspin and return the ball low and hard. This is the classic close-to-the-table quick-attack and blocking rubber, and it is what a hitter rather than a looper wants.

The five-ply all-wood blade is the other reason this is the most sensible of the three DHS bats we stock. All-wood is more forgiving and gives more feel than a carbon blade; five plies is the standard balanced construction.

If you play close to the table and like to hit, this suits you. If you want to learn to loop from both wings, ask us for inverted rubber on both sides instead.

Questions

Good to know

What do the stars mean on a racket?

They are the manufacturer's own tier within their own ready-made range, and nothing more. They are not an ITTF rating and they do not compare between brands - a 6-star STIGA and a 6-star DHS are different scales. More stars means a better blade and better rubbers, and usually a faster, less forgiving bat. STIGA put it well themselves: more stars mean a better bat, but also one that is more difficult to play with.

What is the difference between pips-in and pips-out rubber?

Every rubber is a sheet of pimples on a sponge - the only difference is which way they face. Pips-in, or inverted, has the pimples glued inward so the smooth side meets the ball: maximum friction, maximum spin, and what almost every player should use. Pips-out has the pimples facing outward, so far less of the surface touches the ball: much less spin generated, but also much less of the opponent's spin absorbed, which is the point.

Short pips or long pips - what is the difference?

Long pips are tall and thin and bend on contact, returning your opponent's spin back at them. Short pips are squat and wide: fast, flat and direct. They kill incoming topspin and send the ball back low and hard. Short pips are an attacking rubber for a close-to-the-table hitter; long pips are a defensive disruption rubber.

Is this a good bat to learn on?

Better than the long-pips combination bats, but if you want to learn to loop from both wings you still want inverted rubber on both sides. This bat suits a player who hits flat and plays close to the table. Ask us and we will point you at the right thing.

How do I look after a bat in this climate?

Better than you would need to elsewhere. Heat roughly doubles the rate at which rubber oxidises for every ten degrees, so a bat that lasts a year in a European club can be dead in months here. Never leave one in a parked car. Use protective film on both rubbers after every session and keep it in a case - that single habit does more than anything else. Clean with a proper rubber cleaner or a damp microfibre cloth, never with detergent or solvent, and let it dry fully before sealing it away.

When do rubbers need replacing?

When the topsheet stops gripping - roll a ball across it and see whether it catches or slides. Other signs: loops produce visibly less spin, balls fly long on strokes that used to land deep, the surface looks matt and pale where it was glossy, or the edges are lifting. A player training five hours a week replaces every two to four months; a club player every six to twelve; a casual player when the symptoms show. In Dar heat, expect the shorter end of each range.

What are the official table dimensions?

The ITTF specify a playing surface 2.74 m long by 1.525 m wide, 76 cm above the floor. The net is 15.25 cm high along its whole length, suspended from posts whose outside edges sit 15.25 cm beyond each side line - which is why a regulation net spans 1.83 m, or 72 inches. The ball is 40 mm across and weighs 2.7 g.
