Product description

About this product

Franklin’s X-40 – the official ball of the US Open Pickleball Championships, approved by USA Pickleball for outdoor tournament play.

The construction is what separates it. The X-40 is moulded as one seamless piece of polyethylene, with the 40 holes machine-drilled afterwards. Two-piece balls have a seam, and a seam is a line of weakness – it is where a ball splits after a few sessions on an abrasive outdoor court. No seam means no obvious failure point.

Forty smaller holes is the outdoor pattern. It makes the ball heavier in the air and more stable in wind than an indoor ball, and the harder plastic survives a rough surface. Indoor balls use around 26 larger holes and softer plastic: quieter and slower on a gym floor, but they crack quickly outdoors.

One practical note from Franklin themselves: after a branding refresh, some X-40s ship without the printed logos. The ball is materially identical – it is a cosmetic change, not a different product.

The X-40 ships in several colours, so tell us which you want and we will confirm what is in stock.

Questions

Good to know

Indoor or outdoor pickleballs - what is the difference?

Indoor balls have larger holes, usually 26 of them, and a softer, lighter plastic. They are quieter, slower, and easier to control on a smooth gym floor. Outdoor balls have smaller holes, usually 40, and a harder plastic, because an outdoor ball has to hold its line in wind and survive a rough court. Use an outdoor ball outdoors - an indoor ball cracks quickly on a hard court.

How many balls are in the pack?

Worth checking with us. JOOLA sell the Primo in packs of 4, 20 and 100 - they do not make a 3-pack. Either this is a 4-pack listed as 3 or it is broken-bulk stock. Message us and we will confirm the actual count before you order.

Is it approved for tournament play?

Yes. The Primo is a USA Pickleball approved official outdoor ball, used in tournament and recreational play alike.

How long does an outdoor ball last?

Until it cracks or goes out of round, which on a rough outdoor court can be a handful of sessions of hard play. Cold makes plastic brittle, which is not a problem here; heat and abrasive surfaces are. A ball that has gone oval no longer flies true - replace it rather than persevering.

Can I use it indoors?

You can, but it will be faster and noisier than an indoor ball and it will bounce harder off a gym floor. If you play mostly indoors, buy indoor balls - the difference in control is significant.

What size is a pickleball court?

Twenty feet by forty-four feet, which is the same footprint as a doubles badminton court - 6.10 by 13.41 metres. The net is 36 inches high at the posts and 34 inches at the centre. The non-volley zone, the kitchen, extends seven feet back from the net on each side.

Is padel the same as pickleball?

No, they are different sports and the equipment is not interchangeable. Padel is played on an enclosed 20 by 10 metre court with glass walls that are in play, using a solid perforated racket and a depressurised tennis-type ball. Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized open court with a flat unperforated paddle and a rigid plastic ball with holes in it. A padel racket is too heavy for pickleball and a pickleball paddle cannot play a wall.
