Everything has a home, a security check does not turn your bag into chaos, and you can lift one cube out at a hotel and put it in a drawer. Pack bone dry, and unpack at the other end rather than leaving things sealed.

The zip is where a packing cube fails, because compression cubes are asked to hold fabric under tension every time. Do not force a zip closed over an overstuffed cube - that is what splits the tape away from the fabric. If it does not close with firm steady pressure, take something out.

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry them fully. Machine washing is hard on the zips and the mesh. Wash them when they need it - a cube that has carried worn clothes home from a week away is not clean just because it looks it.
