Highlights

For storage at home, not for packing a suitcase

This is a different animal from a packing cube. It seals airtight and you press the air out, which collapses a duvet or pillows to a fraction of their volume and keeps damp, dust and insects out while they sit in a cupboard.

Airtight seal

Keeps out damp, dust and insects - the three things that ruin stored bedding here.

PE and PA construction

Food-grade laminate, so it holds a seal rather than slowly leaking.

Collapses bulky bedding

A duvet or a set of pillows down to a fraction of the space.

Reusable

Open it, use the contents, seal it again.

Product description

About this product

Air Compression Storage Bag – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

A vacuum-style storage bag is not a packing cube and should not be bought as one. Its job is long-term storage: you put bedding, pillows or out-of-season clothes in, press the air out, and seal it. What comes out is a fraction of the original volume, in a sealed envelope.
In Dar es Salaam the seal matters more than the space saving. Bedding stored loose in a cupboard on the coast absorbs humidity continuously, and given a few months that means mustiness at best and mould at worst. It also collects dust and gives insects somewhere to live. An airtight bag ends all three problems at once.
The material is a PE and PA laminate – the same food-grade construction used for vacuum food storage, chosen because it actually holds a seal rather than leaking slowly back to atmosphere.
The one rule: whatever goes in must be completely dry. Sealing damp bedding airtight does not preserve it, it incubates it. Air it in the sun, make sure it is bone dry, then seal.
A note on the size we have been given. The supplier quotes 16 x 22 cm, which cannot be right for a bag described as holding bedding and pillows – that is likely the folded packaging size. We are measuring the stock and will correct the table rather than publish a figure we know is wrong.

Questions

Good to know

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship countrywide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

Can I store clothes compressed in this climate?

Not for long, and this matters more in Dar es Salaam than almost anywhere. Compression traps whatever humidity was in the fabric when you sealed it, with no airflow to carry it away. Clothes packed slightly damp and compressed for a week will come out smelling, and given long enough they will grow mould. Pack bone dry, and unpack at the other end rather than leaving things sealed.

Will compression help me beat the baggage weight limit?

No. This is the single most common misunderstanding about compression cubes and it is worth being blunt: squeezing the air out reduces volume, not mass. Your clothes weigh exactly the same compressed. Compression buys you space in the case, which lets you take more - and taking more is how people end up over the limit, not under it. Weigh the bag before you leave for the airport.

What is the actual benefit if it does not save weight?

You stop unpacking your whole case to find one shirt. That is it, and it is enough. Everything has a home, a security check does not turn your bag into chaos, and you can lift one cube out at a hotel and put it in a drawer. On a multi-stop trip - Dar, then Zanzibar, then Arusha - it is the difference between living out of a case and repacking it three times.

Are they useful on upcountry trips?

Very. Fine red dust gets into everything on murram roads, and a zipped cube inside a case keeps clean clothes genuinely clean. The same applies on a boat to Zanzibar, where salt spray finds its way into an open bag.

Do the zips last?

The zip is where a packing cube fails, because compression cubes are asked to hold fabric under tension every time. Do not force a zip closed over an overstuffed cube - that is what splits the tape away from the fabric. If it does not close with firm steady pressure, take something out.

Can I wash them?

Hand wash in cool water with mild soap and air dry them fully. Machine washing is hard on the zips and the mesh. Wash them when they need it - a cube that has carried worn clothes home from a week away is not clean just because it looks it.
