This is a textured octopus-pattern bat grip in red.

Grip patterns are not decoration. A smooth rubber grip works by friction between rubber and skin, which is excellent when your hands are dry and progressively worse as they get wet. A raised pattern – the octopus style has small raised suckers across the surface – gives the hand something to key into mechanically rather than relying on friction alone. It keeps working when a smooth grip has started to slide.

In Dar es Salaam that is the relevant consideration. Batting for an hour here, your hands are wet inside the gloves and there is very little you can do about it. A textured grip is doing real work in those conditions.

How do I fit a new grip?

Roll the old one off or cut it away, then use a grip cone: slide the grip onto the wide end of the cone, roll it down over the narrow end onto the handle, and work it down. Doing it without a cone is possible and miserable - most people tear a grip trying. A little talc inside helps it slide.

How often should a grip be changed?

When it has gone hard, shiny or slick, or when it has split at the shoulder. In this climate that is far sooner than in a cool one - sweat and heat harden rubber, and a grip that has gone slippery means the bat turning in your hands. Grips cost very little; change them.

Can I put two grips on?

Yes. It thickens the handle, which suits larger hands, and damps vibration slightly more. Many players use a plain grip underneath and a textured one on top.

Does the colour matter?

Only for identification - though that is worth something when six bats are in a heap in the pavilion. Performance is the same in any colour.

Why do grips harden so quickly here?

Heat and UV both age rubber. Keep the bat out of direct sun and out of a hot car and the grip will last considerably longer.
