A grip cone is the tool for putting a rubber grip onto a bat handle.
It exists because of a simple mismatch: a bat grip is a rubber tube with a considerably smaller diameter than the handle it has to cover. Stretching it over by hand means pulling hard on thin rubber, which tears it – usually near the top, and usually on a grip you have just bought.
The cone solves it mechanically. Roll the grip onto the wide end of the cone, which stretches it evenly around the whole circumference. Slide the cone down over the top of the bat handle. Then roll the grip off the narrow end of the cone and onto the handle, working it down. The whole operation takes half a minute.
A dusting of talcum powder inside the grip makes it slide more easily, particularly in humidity, and makes removing it later much simpler too.
There is nothing to wear out on a cone, so one serves a household, a team or a club indefinitely. If you buy bat grips at all – and everyone should, more often than they do – this is the companion purchase.
It also works in reverse for removing a grip that is still supple: roll the grip up onto the cone rather than cutting it off, and it can be reused.
