This is a 50 kg adjustable dumbbell set: two handles, a set of coated plates and the collars that hold them on.

The argument for adjustable dumbbells in a home gym is space and money. To cover a sensible range with fixed dumbbells – say 2 kg up to 25 kg a hand – you need around ten pairs and something to store them on, which is a corner of a room and a great deal more money. An adjustable set does the same work out of a box you can put under a bed.

The trade is time. Changing weight means undoing two collars, sliding plates off, sliding others on and clamping again – perhaps thirty seconds a side. For straight sets with a rest between them, that is fine. For circuits or drop sets where you need to move immediately to a lighter weight, it is genuinely disruptive, and that is the case for fixed dumbbells.

Adjustable or fixed dumbbells - which should I buy?

Adjustable if space or budget is the constraint, which for a home gym it usually is: one pair covers the whole range for the price of two or three fixed pairs. Fixed if you train in circuits or drop sets, where stopping to unscrew collars between exercises ruins the session.

How do collars work and do I have to use them?

The collars are the clamps that hold the plates on the bar. Always use them, and check them between sets. An unclamped plate slides off mid-rep, the bar tips instantly, and the other end comes down hard. It is the commonest injury with adjustable dumbbells and it is entirely avoidable.

What is the actual weight range per hand?

It depends how the 50 kg is divided between the plates, and our supplier does not publish the breakdown. Ask us and we will list what is in the box - the plate sizes matter more than the total, because they decide how finely you can adjust.

Is 50 kg enough?

For most people training at home, for years. Twenty-five kilos a hand is a serious dumbbell press or row. If you are already training heavy, you will want either a barbell or more plates - tell us and we will see what can be added.

Will it damage my floor?

Any weight dropped on tile or polished concrete will chip it, and iron plates mark wood. Work over a mat or a piece of old carpet, set weights down rather than dropping them, and if you train on an upstairs floor, keep the loads modest - a dropped dumbbell goes through more than you would think.

Does equipment rust in this climate?

Bare iron does, quickly, especially near the coast. Salt in the air plus humidity is the worst combination there is for steel. Wipe sweat off after every session, keep equipment out of direct sun and off a damp floor, and put a light film of oil on any bare metal thread or bar once a month.

I am starting from nothing - what should I buy first?

Something you will actually use three times a week. For most people that is a mat, a pair of light dumbbells and a resistance band, not a heavy set that sits in a corner. Add weight once the habit is established; the equipment is never the reason people stop.
