It fills a real gap. Four items is too much for pockets, especially in gym clothes with no pockets at all, and a rucksack for a forty-minute session is absurd. The small carry bag is the size most people end up improvising badly.
The magnets are the distinguishing feature and the one to be precise about. They hold ferrous metal – a phone fitted with a metal plate or a magnetic-compatible case will stick to the outside; a bare phone will not. It is convenient for keeping a phone visible while you walk or train rather than digging it out of the bag.
One genuine caution about magnets: keep them away from bank cards with a magnetic stripe, hotel key cards and anything with a magnetic strip, which can be wiped by a strong magnet. Modern chip and contactless cards are far more resistant, but stripe-only cards are not. Keep cards in the compartment, not against the magnet.
Water resistance is what a gym bag actually needs. It is not waterproof – do not submerge it or leave it in a downpour – but sweat, a splashed bottle and a light shower will not get through to your phone, which is the realistic requirement.
Dry it out after use. In Dar es Salaam humidity, a closed damp bag develops a smell within a couple of days and the lining goes mouldy within a couple of weeks.
