A bucket hat beats a cap for one simple reason: the sun is not always in front of you. A peak shades your face and leaves your ears and the back of your neck to burn, which is exactly where people who wear caps get caught. A brim running all the way round covers all three.
This one is UPF 50+ – over 98 percent of ultraviolet blocked – in a light polyester that is also waterproof, so it handles a Dar es Salaam afternoon downpour as well as the sun that preceded it. In this climate that dual role gets used more than you would expect; the weather here rarely gives much notice.
At about 70 g it weighs nothing on your head and nothing in your bag. It folds down and recovers its shape, so it lives in a daypack rather than being something you remember or forget.
