Highlights

Shade in every direction, 70 grams

A full brim beats a cap because the sun is not always in front of you. UPF 50+, waterproof, and it packs into nothing.

UPF 50+ all the way round

A full brim shades face, ears and the back of the neck - the three places a cap leaves exposed and people actually burn.

Waterproof fabric

Doubles as rain protection, which in a Tanzanian afternoon downpour is more useful than it sounds.

About 70 g

Almost nothing on your head and almost nothing in a bag, which is why this is the hat that ends up going everywhere.

Drawstring and packable

Cinches under the chin so wind does not take it, and folds into a daypack without losing its shape.

Product description

About this product

A bucket hat beats a cap for one simple reason: the sun is not always in front of you. A peak shades your face and leaves your ears and the back of your neck to burn, which is exactly where people who wear caps get caught. A brim running all the way round covers all three.

This one is UPF 50+ – over 98 percent of ultraviolet blocked – in a light polyester that is also waterproof, so it handles a Dar es Salaam afternoon downpour as well as the sun that preceded it. In this climate that dual role gets used more than you would expect; the weather here rarely gives much notice.

At about 70 g it weighs nothing on your head and nothing in your bag. It folds down and recovers its shape, so it lives in a daypack rather than being something you remember or forget. A drawstring cinches under the chin, which matters on a boat, on a windy ridge or in an open vehicle where an unsecured hat has a short career.

It is breathable enough for long wear in the heat rather than trapping it, and comes in several colours. It suits hiking, camping, fishing, safari, beach days, gardening and school runs – anywhere the sun is, which in Tanzania is most places.

Questions

Good to know

What does UPF 50+ actually mean?

It means the fabric lets through less than one fiftieth of the ultraviolet reaching it - over 98 percent blocked. Tanzania sits near the equator, so the UV index runs high here all year rather than seasonally, and fabric protection does not sweat off or need reapplying the way sunscreen does.

Why a bucket hat rather than a cap?

Because a cap leaves your ears and the back of your neck in full sun. A brim all the way round covers all three areas, and those are where most people actually burn.

Is it really waterproof?

It sheds rain well, which is what you want from a hat. It is not a substitute for a rain jacket, but in a sudden downpour it keeps your head and face dry.

Will it blow off on a boat or in an open vehicle?

Not with the drawstring pulled under your chin. That is exactly what it is there for, and it is the reason this style works on the water and on safari.

Does it survive being packed?

Yes. It folds into a daypack and comes out its own shape, which is what makes it the hat you actually have with you.

Is it hot to wear in Dar es Salaam?

Less than being bare-headed in direct sun. The polyester is light and breathable, and the shade it creates more than offsets the layer.

What size is it?

It is made in a standard adult fit with a drawstring for adjustment. If you have a particularly large or small head, try one in the Dar es Salaam showroom first.

Can I wash it?

Hand wash in cool water and let it dry in shade. Avoid hot water and machine drying, which will shrink and distort a light polyester hat.

Where do these figures come from?

The measurements and weights on this page come from the supplier's own documentation rather than an independently tested manufacturer specification, and the table marks them as such. If a particular figure matters to you, ask us and we will check the item in the Dar es Salaam showroom before you buy.
