About this product
This is a 50 kg adjustable dumbbell set: two handles, a set of coated plates and the collars that hold them on.
The argument for adjustable dumbbells in a home gym is space and money. To cover a sensible range with fixed dumbbells – say 2 kg up to 25 kg a hand – you need around ten pairs and something to store them on, which is a corner of a room and a great deal more money. An adjustable set does the same work out of a box you can put under a bed.
The trade is time. Changing weight means undoing two collars, sliding plates off, sliding others on and clamping again – perhaps thirty seconds a side. For straight sets with a rest between them, that is fine. For circuits or drop sets where you need to move immediately to a lighter weight, it is genuinely disruptive, and that is the case for fixed dumbbells.
The coating on the plates does more here than it does in a cooler country. It keeps the iron off your floor, it cuts the noise of plates knocking together, and – most usefully in Dar es Salaam – it keeps moisture off the iron. Bare cast iron near the coast rusts remarkably quickly, and rust on a plate means rust on your hands and your floor.
Use the collars every single time. An unclamped plate slides off during a press, the bar tips instantly, and the other end comes down. It is the commonest way people hurt themselves with adjustable dumbbells and it takes five seconds to avoid.
