YH3218 Cable Padlock - 3-Dial Combination, Flexible Steel Shackle

Locks

A zinc alloy combination lock on a flexible steel cable rather than a rigid shackle, so it threads through zip pulls, mesh pockets and locker doors a solid lock will not reach.

Highlights

The cable is the reason to buy this one

A rigid shackle only fits where two zip pulls sit close together. A flexible steel cable threads through pulls that are far apart, through a mesh pocket, through a backpack daisy chain, or around a gym locker handle. It goes places a solid lock cannot.

Flexible steel cable

Reaches zip pulls a rigid shackle will not span, and loops around fixed objects.

Zinc alloy body

Heavier and more solid than a plastic lock. Rinse it after coastal trips.

3-digit code

1,000 combinations, set by you. Fewer than a four-dial lock - see the note below.

TSA keyway

Screeners in the US can open and reclose rather than cut. Read our note on what that is worth.

Product description

About this product

Dial Combination Cable Padlock – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The cable shackle is what distinguishes this from an ordinary padlock. A rigid shackle needs two zip pulls sitting within a couple of centimetres of each other; a flexible cable threads through pulls at opposite ends of a bag, through a mesh side pocket, through the daisy chain on a rucksack, or around the handle of a gym or hostel locker. If you have ever stood over a bag realising the lock will not reach, this solves it.
The body is zinc alloy – more substantial than a plastic lock, and heavier. Zinc and coastal air do not agree, so rinse and dry it after a trip to Zanzibar or Bagamoyo and put a drop of oil on the cable where it enters the body.
Three dials means a thousand combinations against ten thousand on a four-dial lock. Against a determined person neither number matters; against someone idly spinning dials in a baggage hall, three dials is still a deterrent. Choose on whether you want the cable, not on the dial count.
It carries a TSA keyway, which is worth something if your bag passes through the United States and nothing at all if it does not. We have not verified the Travel Sentry licence ourselves, so we describe the keyway rather than claim approval.

Buying a Dial Combination Cable Padlock in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the dial combination cable padlock at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every dial combination cable padlock is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which dial combination cable padlock suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the dial combination cable padlock are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship countrywide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

Do I need a TSA lock flying out of Dar es Salaam?

Only if your bag will be screened in the United States. TSA is a US agency. Flying Dar to Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Nairobi, Addis, Mumbai, London or Amsterdam, a TSA keyway does nothing for you - screeners in those countries have no TSA master key and no obligation to use one. It matters if you are connecting onward to the US, or if you want one lock that covers every trip.

What does TSA-approved actually mean?

It means the lock carries a keyway that US Transportation Security Administration screeners hold a master key for, so they can open and reclose your bag instead of cutting the lock off. Genuine ones are licensed by Travel Sentry and carry a red diamond mark, or by Safe Skies and carry a torch mark. If a lock has no mark, nobody can verify the licence - including us.

Is a TSA lock less secure than a normal one?

In one specific way, yes, and you should know it. Every TSA lock has a master keyway by design, and photographs of the master key patterns leaked publicly in 2015 - working copies can be reproduced from them. So a TSA lock resists a casual opportunist and nothing more. That is true of every TSA lock on the market, not just this one.

So what is a luggage lock really for?

Deterrence and tamper evidence, not security. Any zipped soft bag can be opened in seconds with a ballpoint pen and re-zipped, lock or no lock. What a lock does is stop a casual hand in a baggage hall, and show you on arrival that someone has been in. Nothing you would genuinely miss should be in checked luggage at all.

What if I forget the combination?

There is no reset service and no override for you - only the TSA keyway, which you do not hold a key to. The lock would have to be cut off. Set a code you will actually remember, write it somewhere that is not in the bag, and test it twice before you check the bag in.

How do I set the combination?

Combination luggage locks are normally set open, with a small button or lever held while you turn the dials to your chosen code. The exact sequence varies by lock, so follow the slip in the packet. Set it before you pack, not at the airport.

Will it corrode on the coast?

Salt air along the Dar and Zanzibar coastline attacks the shackle and the dials faster than anything inland. Rinse it in fresh water after a beach trip, dry it, and put a drop of light oil on the shackle occasionally. A lock that has seized on its dials is no more use than one that has been cut off.
