Product description

About this product

Perseus 3s Pickleball Paddle – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

The Perseus is Ben Johns’s signature shape at JOOLA, and this is the 14 mm core version – an elongated carbon-faced paddle at the professional end of their range.

Core thickness is the choice that matters most, and it is a genuine trade-off rather than a better-or-worse. A 14 mm core is stiffer, so more of the impact energy returns as ball speed. It hits harder and feels more direct off the face, which suits a player who wants to drive and put balls away.

The body is elongated at 16.5 by 7.5 inches with an 11 inch hitting surface – more reach and more leverage than a widebody, at the cost of a narrower face. The handle is 5.5 inches, long enough for a two-handed backhand. Swing weight measures 117, which is moderate: enough mass to drive through a ball without being slow at the net.

One thing to settle before a tournament. JOOLA make the 3S in two generations. The original 3S is UPA-A certified but explicitly not USA Pickleball approved; the newer 3S Dual carries both certifications. The original has a black and turquoise edge guard, the Dual a teal-purple gradient. Ask us which generation we are holding rather than assuming – it is the difference between being eligible and not.

This is a pickleball paddle. Padel is a different sport and the equipment does not cross over.

Questions

Good to know

Is padel the same as pickleball?

No, they are different sports and the equipment is not interchangeable. Padel is played on an enclosed 20 by 10 metre court with glass walls that are in play, using a solid perforated racket and a depressurised tennis-type ball. Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized open court with a flat unperforated paddle and a rigid plastic ball with holes in it. A padel racket is too heavy for pickleball and a pickleball paddle cannot play a wall.

What does core thickness change on a pickleball paddle?

A thinner core - 13 or 14 mm - is stiffer, so more energy comes back as ball speed. It hits harder and feels more direct, at the cost of touch. A thicker core - 16 mm - deforms more on impact, which absorbs energy and gives a softer, more controlled feel with better dwell time for dinks and resets. Power players tend to 14 mm, control players to 16 mm.

Is it approved for tournament play?

This needs checking against the stock. JOOLA make the 3S in two generations: the original 3S is UPA-A certified but explicitly NOT USA Pickleball approved, while the newer 3S Dual carries both. The original has a black and turquoise edge guard; the Dual has a teal-purple or blue-green gradient. Ask us which we hold before entering a sanctioned event.

Why the long 5.5 inch handle?

It gives room for a two-handed backhand, which a lot of players coming from tennis want. The trade-off is a slightly shorter hitting face for the same overall length, so the sweet spot sits a little higher on the paddle.

What is swing weight and why does it matter?

It measures how heavy the paddle feels while you swing it, rather than on a scale. A higher swing weight gives more plough-through and power but slower hands at the net. For reference, this paddle measures 117 on the 14 mm and 121 on the 16 mm - both moderate, so neither is sluggish.

Indoor or outdoor pickleballs - what is the difference?

Indoor balls have larger holes, usually 26 of them, and a softer, lighter plastic. They are quieter, slower, and easier to control on a smooth gym floor. Outdoor balls have smaller holes, usually 40, and a harder plastic, because an outdoor ball has to hold its line in wind and survive a rough court. Use an outdoor ball outdoors - an indoor ball cracks quickly on a hard court.

What size is a pickleball court?

Twenty feet by forty-four feet, which is the same footprint as a doubles badminton court - 6.10 by 13.41 metres. The net is 36 inches high at the posts and 34 inches at the centre. The non-volley zone, the kitchen, extends seven feet back from the net on each side.
