Product description

About this product

Person Dome Backpacking Tent – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

A light, fast-pitch dome tent for two or three people, built for rain, heat and repeated packing.

The CORE 40384 is the tent to reach for when you want to be standing before dark and dry before the rain reaches you. The poles slide into sleeves and finish in CORE Connect ball-and-socket feet, so they drop into place without threading or guesswork and the whole thing is up in about five minutes. Over the top goes a full-coverage H2O Block rainfly: 68D polyester treated to 1200 mm, factory taped, seams sealed, guylines already attached.

Inside, the 7 ft x 7 ft floor takes three sleeping mats side by side, or one full-size air bed with room left for packs. The ceiling is all mesh, so on a dry night you can leave the fly off and sleep under the stars. With the fly on, ground-level intake vents pull cool air in while warm air escapes through the mesh, which is the difference between a tolerable and an unbearable night on the coast. A gear loft with a lantern hook, wall pockets and an electrical port keep torches, phones and cables off the floor.

At 8 lbs (3.6 kg) packed into a 20 in bag, it carries comfortably on a one or two-night hike and disappears into a car boot for Mikumi, Saadani or a Ruaha weekend.

Questions

Good to know

Will it really sleep three?

Three adults fit shoulder to shoulder on the 7 ft x 7 ft floor with bags left outside. Two adults plus gear is the comfortable setup, and one person can fit a full-size air bed with room to spare.

Will it keep the rain out?

It is water-resistant rather than waterproof. The fabric is treated and rated 1200 mm, the rainfly covers the whole tent and the seams are factory taped, which handles normal rain. CORE recommends sealing the seams on first setup and before each season. It is a 3-season tent, so pitch off low ground and peg the guylines when wind is expected.

How does it handle hot, humid nights?

Ground-level vents pull cool air in and the full mesh ceiling lets warm air out. On a dry night at the coast you can leave the rainfly off and sleep under the mesh.

How long does it take to pitch?

About five minutes. The poles slide into sleeves and the ball-and-socket feet drop into place without threading. CORE recommends two people for lifting the poles into the arch, though one person manages it with a little practice.

Is it light enough to hike with?

It packs to 20 inches and weighs 8 lbs (3.6 kg). Comfortable for a one or two-night hike, and easy to split between two people on longer trails.

Can I use a lantern or heater inside?

Use a battery lantern on the gear loft hook. The fabric meets CPAI-84 flame-resistance specifications, but never run a flame, gas heater or stove inside the tent: there is no ventilation for exhaust and carbon monoxide is the real danger.

How do I look after it?

Clean with a soft sponge, mild soap and tepid water, then air-dry it fully in the sun before packing. Re-seal the seams before each season. Store the poles and stakes in their own bags and roll the tent around the poles to push the air out.
