Product description

About this product

A 1.53 kg two-person double-wall tent on a single Yuksom aluminium pole, with a door and a vestibule on each side.

This is where ultralight stops being a marketing word. The Mongar UL pitches on one 8.5 mm aluminium pole and weighs 1.53 kg stripped, 1.67 kg with everything in the bag. That is a genuine backpacking weight, and Naturehike gets there without dropping to a single skin: there is still a separate inner and fly, still an air gap, still somewhere for condensation to run that is not down your sleeping bag.

The fabrics are where the weight went. The fly is 15D ripstop nylon with a silicone coating, the inner 20D nylon, and the floor a tougher 210T polyester rated PU5000mm+, because the ground is what punishes a tent. Thin fabric is strong for its weight but unforgiving of grit and carelessness, which is why a footprint is in the box rather than sold separately.

There are two doors and two vestibules, one per side. On a two-person tent that is the difference between climbing over your tent-mate at night and simply stepping out of your own door, and it means each person has their own covered space for boots and a pack.

Inner floor is 210 x 130 cm with 105 cm of headroom, so you sit up but do not stand. Packed it is a 15 cm by 41 cm cylinder.

Questions

Good to know

Is 1.53 kg the weight I actually carry?

1.53 kg is the minimum trail weight: fly, inner and pole only. With stakes, guy lines, footprint and bag it is 1.67 kg. Carry the lot and you are still under 1.7 kg, and split between two people it is under a kilo each.

Naturehike lists two different waterproof ratings. Which is right?

Their spec table says the fly is PU1500mm+ and their marketing text says PU2000mm+. We publish the spec table figure, 1500 mm, because it is the conservative one and it is the number in their technical data. Either way the floor is the more important rating here, and that is PU5000mm+.

Two doors on a tent this light, why does that matter?

With one door, whoever sleeps on the inside climbs over the other person every time they get up at night, and both packs share one vestibule. Two doors gives each person their own exit and their own covered space for boots and a pack. On a two-person tent it is the feature you notice most.

Is 15D fabric too fragile?

It is strong for its weight but it does not forgive carelessness. Clear stones and thorns before pitching, always use the included footprint, never drag the tent along the ground, and it will last. Treat it like a heavy canvas tent and it will not.

Can I sit up in it?

Yes, 105 cm at the peak. You can sit upright, change clothes and cook in the vestibule doorway, but you cannot kneel fully upright at the ends. That is the trade for the weight.

Does it need a separate groundsheet?

No, the footprint is in the box. Use it. On a 210T floor it is the cheapest insurance against a puncture you cannot repair on the trail.

How do I look after it?

Never store it damp, even for a night. Dry both layers fully, especially after the coast. Sponge with cool water and mild soap, never machine wash or use detergent, which strips the silicone and PU coatings. Store loose in a dry bag, not compressed in its stuff sack.
