Highlights

Fifty-five litres, in a colour you can pick out

Blue is easy to identify in a pile of packs at a trekking camp and dark enough that dust does not make it look tired.

55 litres

The capacity most multi-day trekkers settle on - enough for several days, narrow enough to move in on a trail.

Water-resistant nylon

High-density fabric with a coating, plus an integrated rain cover for when the coating is not enough.

Adjustable chest and waist belts

Set the load onto your hips rather than your shoulders, which is what decides how a long day feels.

Gear loops and straps

Tent, mat and trekking poles ride outside, leaving the main compartment for things that must stay dry.

Product description

About this product

Blue sits between the extremes. It is distinct enough that you can identify your pack across a trekking camp where a dozen black ones are lined up against a wall, and dark enough that the dust of a Tanzanian dry season does not make it look worn out after a single trip.

Fifty-five litres is the size most multi-day trekkers settle on. It holds a sleeping bag, a mat, spare clothes, food and a stove with room to spare, and it is still small enough to move properly in on a narrow trail – which a 75 litre pack is not. On Kilimanjaro and Meru, where porters carry the camp gear, it is usually more than enough for what you carry yourself.

The fabric is high-density nylon with a water-resistant coating, and a rain cover is built in for when that is not enough. The suspension has padded shoulder straps with adjustable chest and waist belts, so the load sits on your hips rather than dragging on your shoulders – the single thing that decides whether a long day is comfortable.

Storage is laid out for gear that has to come out at different times: a large main compartment, multiple internal sections and external pockets, and gear loops and straps on the outside for a tent, a mat or trekking poles. Things you need during the day stay reachable instead of being buried.

It weighs about 1.7 kg empty and measures 70 x 34 x 23 cm. It suits multi-day hiking, trekking, mountaineering and long travel – and it is the size we most often recommend to people climbing Kilimanjaro for the first time.

Questions

Good to know

Is 55 litres the right size for Kilimanjaro?

For most people, yes. Porters carry the camp gear on Kilimanjaro, so your own pack holds layers, water, snacks and a camera. 55 litres covers that with room for a sleeping bag if you carry your own.

How many days will it cover if I carry everything?

Carrying your own tent, bag, mat and food, roughly three to five days. Beyond that the 70L+5L pack is the one to look at.

How do I fit it properly?

Tighten the hip belt first, sitting on the top of your hip bones, then the shoulder straps, then the load lifters. The weight should sit on your hips. Come to the Dar es Salaam showroom and we will fit it loaded.

Is the rain cover included?

Yes, integrated into the pack. The fabric has a water-resistant coating on its own, but in the long rains the cover is what keeps a sleeping bag dry.

Can I attach trekking poles and a tent?

Yes, there are external gear loops and straps for exactly that. It keeps bulky items outside where they belong rather than eating your main compartment.

Can it take a water bladder?

Tell us before you order and we will check the bladder opening on the pack in stock. We keep bladders in Dar es Salaam either way.

Will it go as checked luggage on a flight?

Yes. Tuck the hip belt and straps in or use a transit cover so nothing catches in a baggage system.

Do you deliver to Moshi and Arusha?

Yes, we ship across Tanzania and send packs to Moshi and Arusha regularly for Kilimanjaro climbs. Message us for cost and timing.
