Highlights

The cheapest dry sleeping bag you can buy

Water-resistant fabric holds out a shower. A rain cover holds out a Tanzanian downpour, for the price of a couple of coffees.

High-visibility orange

Makes your pack visible on a roadside, in a vehicle at night, or on a trail in poor light. Worth having on the walk out as well as in the rain.

Elastic edge

Pulls tight around the pack so it stays put in wind rather than creeping off while you walk.

Waterproof nylon

Tear and abrasion resistant as well as waterproof, so it survives being stuffed in a lid pocket trip after trip.

Packs into its own pouch

Small enough to live in your pack permanently, which is the only way a rain cover is ever there when you need it.

Product description

About this product

A backpack described as water resistant will hold out a shower. It will not hold out a Tanzanian long-rains downpour, and the thing that gets wet first is whatever is against the back panel – usually a sleeping bag or a change of clothes, which are exactly what you need dry at the end of the day.

A rain cover fixes that for very little money and almost no weight. This one is waterproof nylon with an elastic edge that pulls tight around the pack, so it stays on in wind and does not creep off as you walk. It packs down into its own small pouch, which is how it ends up living permanently in a lid pocket rather than being left at home.

It does more than rain. On a dusty road, in the back of a pickup, or on an airline baggage belt, the cover keeps grit off the fabric and keeps straps from catching in machinery – which is how most packs get damaged in transit. Many people use one every time their pack travels, rain or not.

It fits a range of backpack sizes through the elastic edge. Tell us the litre capacity of your pack and we will confirm the right fit before you order.

Questions

Good to know

Why orange?

Visibility. An orange cover makes your pack easy to see on a roadside, in a vehicle at night or in poor light on a trail. On a walk out after dark that is worth more than the colour of your jacket.

Which size do I need?

The elastic edge covers a range of pack sizes, but a cover that is too large flaps and one that is too small will not go on. Tell us the litre capacity of your pack and we will confirm the right fit before you order.

Does my pack not already have one?

Some do - our 45L, 55L and 70L Naturehike packs have integrated covers. Most daypacks do not, and that is who this is for.

Will it stay on in wind?

The elastic edge holds it tight against the pack. In strong wind, clip or tie the cover to a strap as well - any rain cover can be pulled off by a real gust.

Will it keep everything dry in heavy rain?

It keeps the rain off the pack fabric, which is most of the job. Water can still track down your back and in at the straps. For guaranteed dry, put a dry bag inside the pack for the things that matter.

Is it worth using when it is not raining?

Many people do - on dusty roads, in a pickup bed, and on airline baggage belts, where the cover keeps grit off and stops straps catching in machinery.

How small does it pack?

Into its own small pouch, small enough to live permanently in a lid pocket. That is why it is there on the day you need it.

How do I clean it?

Rinse with fresh water, hang it to dry fully, then pack it. Putting a wet cover away is what makes it smell.

Do you stock these in Dar es Salaam?

Yes, we keep them in the showroom and ship across Tanzania. Message us with your pack size for delivery.
