Highlights

How a helmet actually works

And the one thing we will not claim about this one.

Shell and liner do different jobs

The PC shell spreads the force, the EPS liner absorbs it by crushing.

Ventilation matters here

A helmet too hot to wear is a helmet that gets left at home.

One impact and it is finished

Crushed EPS does not spring back, and the damage rarely shows from outside.

Certification not documented

We will not claim a standard we cannot evidence. Ask us what carries one.

Product description

About this product

Bicycle Helmet for Men – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A unisex cycling helmet built the way most modern helmets are: a polycarbonate outer shell bonded to an expanded polystyrene liner in a single integrated construction, with large vents through the shell.

Those two materials do different jobs. The PC shell spreads the force of an impact across a wider area and lets the helmet slide rather than snag on the road. The EPS liner underneath absorbs that spread-out energy by crushing – which is why a helmet is a single-use item, and why any helmet that has taken an impact must be replaced even if it looks fine.

The vents are not a comfort luxury in Tanzania. A closed helmet in this heat becomes genuinely unpleasant within twenty minutes, and a rider who stops wearing a helmet because it is too hot is worse off than one wearing a well-ventilated one.

One thing we want to be straight about. We are not able to state a safety certification for this helmet, because the supplier has not provided documentation of one, and we are not willing to publish a safety claim we cannot evidence. If a documented standard matters to you – and for a helmet it reasonably should – ask us and we will tell you honestly what in our range carries one.

Questions

Good to know

What safety standard does it meet?

We are not able to state a certification for this helmet, because the supplier has not provided documentation of one and we will not publish a safety claim we cannot evidence. If a certified helmet matters to you - and for most riders it should - ask us and we will tell you honestly which helmets in our range come with documented certification.

How should a helmet fit?

Level on the head, not tipped back. Two fingers width between your eyebrows and the rim. The side straps should form a Y just below each ear, and the chin strap tight enough that you can get one finger under it and no more. A helmet that moves when you shake your head is not protecting you.

How do I measure my head?

Run a tape measure around your head about a centimetre above the eyebrows and around the widest point at the back. That measurement in centimetres is your size. Measure before you order rather than guessing - helmet fit is the whole product.

Do I need to replace it after a crash?

Yes, after any impact to the helmet, even if it looks undamaged. EPS foam protects by crushing, and crushed foam does not spring back. The damage is usually invisible from outside. A helmet that has taken one impact has done its job and owes you nothing further.

How long does a helmet last?

Manufacturers generally advise replacing a helmet every three to five years. In Tanzania, treat that as the outside limit - UV, heat and sweat all degrade EPS foam and strap webbing faster here than in a temperate climate. A helmet stored on a balcony in full sun ages considerably faster than one kept indoors.

How should I look after it?

Keep it out of direct sun when you are not wearing it, and never leave it in a parked car - interior temperatures here will soften EPS foam. Clean the shell with mild soap and water only. Never use solvents, degreasers or petrol-based cleaners on a helmet shell; they weaken the plastic invisibly.

Can I wash the pads?

Yes, and in this heat you should. Remove the liner pads, wash them by hand in mild soap, and air-dry them out of direct sun. A foaming kit cleaner works well for pads that stay in place. Sweat-soaked padding is both unpleasant and bad for the foam underneath.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
