A word about the brightness figure. WEST BIKING quote a maximum of 2,400 lumens. We are passing that on as the supplier’s figure, and we would be doing you no favours by presenting it as measured fact. Lumen ratings in this category are usually theoretical emitter maximums – what the LED chips could produce at full drive current in laboratory conditions – rather than measured output from the finished light at a runtime you would actually use. The real figure from a light of this size is meaningfully lower, and the figure at the brightness setting you will ride on lower still.
That is not a reason to dismiss it. A twin-T6 light is genuinely bright – bright enough to ride unlit roads at speed, which is the practical question. It is a reason not to compare lumen numbers between brands as though they mean the same thing.
The taillight matters at least as much here. On Tanzanian roads at dusk, being seen from behind by a fast-moving vehicle is the safety problem, and a front light does nothing about it.
Set the beam so the bright part falls on the road twenty or thirty metres ahead rather than into oncoming eyes – a dazzled driver is a hazard to you.
