HEAD Prime double yellow dot - the competition ball, and the slowest and lowest-bouncing made. Superb in the hands of a good player, and genuinely miserable for a beginner, because it needs the most warming of any ball and dies on the floor if you cannot hit hard enough.

About this product

Double Dot Squash Ball – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

HEAD’s Prime – a double yellow dot squash ball, which is the competition standard and the slowest, lowest-bouncing ball made.

HEAD’s Prime is their redeveloped premium double yellow, approved to World Squash Federation specifications and longer-lasting than the Championship ball it replaced.

Here is the thing about double yellow that shops usually skip. A squash ball only bounces properly once it is hot – the air inside the rubber has to be warmed by repeated hard impact before the ball comes alive. A double yellow is engineered to need the most warming of any ball, deliberately, so that strong players hitting hard do not produce endless rallies.

Which means that in a beginner’s hands it is miserable. They cannot hit hard enough to warm it, the cold ball dies on the floor off the front wall, every rally lasts two shots, and they conclude squash is impossible or that they are bad at it. None of that is their fault – it is the wrong ball.

If you are starting out, buy a blue dot. Then red, then single yellow, and come to double yellow when you are hitting properly. If you already play at a decent level, this is the ball you want and nothing else will do.

HEAD supply it in a three-ball tube and position it on control and consistency – which is what a competition ball is actually selling. A ball that behaves identically every time is what lets you trust a length.

One local advantage: a warm Dar court brings any ball up faster than a cold European one, so a double yellow is a little more forgiving here than it would be in a British club in February.

Questions

Good to know

What do the dots on a squash ball mean?

How much it bounces, and therefore how long rallies last. Fastest and bounciest to slowest and deadest: blue, red, single yellow, double yellow. Double yellow is the competition ball - the lowest bounce of all, because strong players hitting hard would otherwise produce endless rallies.

Which squash ball should a beginner buy?

A blue dot, and nothing else. A squash ball only bounces properly once it is hot, and a double yellow needs the most warming of any ball. A beginner cannot hit hard enough to warm it, so it dies on the floor, every rally lasts two shots, and they conclude they are bad at squash. A blue dot is larger and bounces cold - they will have real rallies on day one.

Why does a squash ball need warming up?

Because the bounce comes from air inside the rubber expanding as the ball heats through repeated hard impact. Cold, the rubber is stiff and the ball barely comes off the floor. Five minutes of hitting before a match is not a courtesy - it is what makes the ball playable. One upside here: a warm Dar court brings a ball up faster than a cold European one.

How long does a squash ball last?

Until it splits, which on a hard-hit ball is a matter of weeks of regular play. A ball also gradually loses its bounce as the rubber fatigues - if it feels dead even after a proper warm-up, it is finished rather than cold.

Why does the court temperature matter?

Because bounce comes from air inside the rubber expanding with heat. A warm court brings a ball up faster and keeps it livelier, which is one genuine advantage of playing in Dar es Salaam - a double yellow behaves better here than on a cold winter court in Europe.

What is the green dot for?

High altitude. Thinner air means less resistance and a livelier ball, so altitude courts use a ball with a lower rebound to compensate. Not relevant at sea level in Dar, but it is why you will see them.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat is hard on strings - polyester loses tension fastest of all string types and heat accelerates it sharply, so expect to restring more often than a European schedule suggests. Never leave a racket in a car boot. Humidity is hard on grips and on natural gut, which absorbs moisture and softens. And pressurised balls go dead faster in heat, opened or not.
