This is a replacement volleyball net: 9.5 metres long, 1 metre deep, in black polyester with 10 cm square mesh.
The net is the part of a volleyball setup that wears out. Posts and ground sockets last for decades; the net stretches, the tape along the top edge frays where the ball hits it, and it eventually tears at the ends where all the tension is concentrated. Replacing it is routine maintenance rather than a purchase.
Set the height properly and measure at the centre. Official height is 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women, taken at the middle of the court, and the rules allow the net to be up to 2 cm higher at the posts – which is a recognition that every net sags. Setting it by measuring at the posts is the commonest error and leaves the middle too low, which makes blocking easier and spiking safer than it should be.
Tension the top cable properly. It is the cable along the top edge that carries the load and holds the height, not the mesh. A net tensioned through the mesh distorts and tears at the corners within a season.
If the court is outdoors, take the net down between sessions. Sun is what kills nets in Tanzania – UV makes the mesh brittle and splits the tape along the top within a season. A net that is brought in lasts for years instead.
