A floating basketball hoop turns a pool into a court for the afternoon. The whole design question is whether it stays upright, and this one carries its buoyancy where it needs to be – the hoop sits up and faces the players instead of rolling over the first time someone shoots hard.
At 61 cm it is sized so a game works for mixed ages. Adults get a target worth shooting at, children get one they can actually score through, and everyone can play in the same game – which is more than most pool toys manage.
Practically, it is the thing that makes a pool party work. Left to themselves, people stand in a pool and talk. Put a hoop in it and everyone plays, which is the difference between a pool being used and a pool being looked at. It is also good exercise in disguise, because a game of water basketball is harder work than it looks.
Inflate it firm but not drum-hard. PVC expands in strong sun, so a toy pumped hard in the morning can be under much higher pressure by midday – which is how seams split. Rinse the chlorine off afterwards and dry it before folding.
It is a toy, not a float. It will not support a person and should not be used as one, and children in a pool need an adult watching regardless of what they are playing with.
