Anyone who has tried to boil water on an exposed site knows the problem. The stove sounds like it is working, the flame is lit, and twenty minutes later the water is still not boiling while the canister is noticeably lighter. Wind carries the heat away before it reaches the pot, and on a ridge or an open plain it can easily double both the time and the gas used.
This windshield is ten aluminium alloy panels hinged together so the whole thing wraps into whatever shape the site calls for – a tight circle around a small canister-top burner, a wide arc around a double stove, or an L shape when only one direction is exposed. Opened out it is 84.5 cm long and 24 cm tall, which is enough to surround a stove properly rather than shielding one side of it.
The aluminium has a frosted, oxidised surface that resists corrosion and reflects heat back towards the pot, and there is a groove along the bottom edge that controls how much air reaches the flame – enough for clean combustion, not enough to cool it. Stainless steel stakes come with it, and they matter: an unpegged windshield tends to blow over onto the burner at the worst moment.
At about 250 g and folding flat to 11.5 x 27 cm, it is light enough to carry up Kilimanjaro or Meru, where wind and altitude both work against a stove, and equally useful pegged into the ground at a Serengeti camp or on a windy beach at Kigamboni.
