There are two kinds of gas torch. One is a cooking tool with a plastic body, bought to light charcoal and finish a creme brulee. This is the other kind: brass through the body, nozzle and valve, built for the sort of sustained running that softens a plastic housing.

The brass matters practically. Brass conducts heat away from the valve and holds its shape under a long run at full flame, which is what you want when soldering a joint or working a seized bolt loose rather than giving a steak a ten-second sear. The knurled adjuster gives finer control than a plastic knob does, so the same torch produces a soft tip for kitchen work and a hard, concentrated jet for metal.

Ignition is manual – hold a flame or a spark to the nozzle as you open the gas – which is deliberately simple. There is no piezo unit to fail, nothing electronic to corrode in coastal humidity, and the torch will still work in five years with no parts to replace. Which gas canister does it fit?

It clamps onto a standard long butane cassette canister - the same can used by the portable cassette gas stoves sold everywhere in Tanzania. Push it on, twist to lock, and it is ready. It does not screw onto a threaded camping canister and it does not connect to a domestic LPG cylinder.

Why manual ignition instead of a push-button?

There is nothing to fail. A piezo unit is one more part that corrodes in coastal humidity, and this torch is built to be run hard for years. If you want one-press lighting, our piezo flame gun is the model to look at.

How do I light it?

Open the gas slightly and hold a lighter or a match to the nozzle, then open the valve to the flame you want. It takes a second and becomes automatic after the first few times.

What is the difference between this and the flame gun?

This one is brass-bodied with manual ignition, made for sustained heat and workshop use. The flame gun is lighter, has push-button ignition and is the easier choice for cooking and lighting charcoal.

Is a gas canister included?

No. It takes a standard butane cassette canister, which we stock separately in Dar es Salaam.

Can I solder copper pipe with it?

Yes, for soft soldering of small and medium copper joints. For heavy brazing or thick steel you need an oxy-acetylene setup rather than a butane torch.

Does the brass body get hot?

Brass conducts heat, so the nozzle end gets hot in use and stays hot for a while afterwards. Hold it by the rear grip and set it down on a non-flammable surface to cool.

Is it suitable for kitchen use?

It works well for searing and caramelising. The adjuster is fine enough for delicate work - it simply asks you to light it with a match rather than a button.
