About this product

A braai set is one of those things people improvise until they get tired of it. Kitchen tongs are too short, a dinner fork bends, and the spatula from home ends up black. This Naturehike set is the four tools that actually get used at a fire, made properly in 430 stainless steel with wooden handles, and supplied in a roll bag so they stay together between trips.

The tongs are the piece you will use most – 332 mm long, which puts your hand a comfortable distance from a bed of charcoal. The fork, at 290 mm, is for lifting whole pieces off the grate, and the spatula shares that length with a 70 mm wide head, wide enough to get under fish or a burger without losing half of it into the coals. The basting brush finishes the set at 220 mm, for oil, marinade or the mchuzi you keep going in a tin beside the fire.

430 stainless is the practical choice for outdoor cooking. It resists the salt, smoke and acidic marinade that ruin cheaper plated tools, and it cleans up with water rather than needing a scrub. The wooden handles stay cool longer than bare metal would, and give a grip that does not slide when your hands are oily.

Good to know

Are the tongs long enough for a charcoal jiko?

Yes. At 33 cm they keep your hand well clear of an open jiko or a full braai grate. They are noticeably longer than kitchen tongs, which is the whole point of the set.

Will the stainless steel rust near the coast?

430 stainless handles Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar humidity well. Dry the tools after washing rather than leaving them wet in the bag and they will stay clean for years.

Can the wooden handles go in water?

Wipe them rather than soaking them. Long soaking swells any wooden handle and loosens it over time. A wipe with a damp cloth after use is all they need.

Is the brush safe for hot oil and marinade?

Yes, the brush head is built for basting over heat. Rinse it out while it is still warm so the marinade does not set in the bristles.

Does it come with a case?

It comes with a roll bag that holds all four tools. Most people leave the set in the bag inside their camping box so nothing goes missing between trips.

Can I use these on a gas braai as well as charcoal?

Yes. Nothing in the set is specific to charcoal - they work the same on a gas grill, a jiko or a fire pit.
