Highlights

One person, everything they need to eat

Plate, bowl, cup and cutlery in polished stainless steel. Nothing to melt, nothing to stain, nothing to replace next season.

Six pieces, one person

Plate, bowl, cup, knife, fork and spoon - a complete setting rather than a plate and a spork.

Stainless steel throughout

Will not melt against a hot pot, will not stain from pilau or tomato, and will not rust on the coast.

Mesh carry bag

The mesh matters - wash up, drop everything back in, and it dries in the bag instead of going away damp.

Stacks small

The pieces nest into each other, so the whole setting takes about the space of the plate alone.

Product description

About this product

Plastic camping crockery has a short life. It stains from anything with tomato or turmeric in it, it warps if it touches a hot pot, and it eventually cracks. This mess kit is the alternative: a full place setting for one person in polished stainless steel – a plate, a bowl, a cup, and a knife, fork and spoon.

Stainless is the right material for outdoor eating. It takes heat, so resting it against a pot is a non-event. It does not hold flavours or colours, so yesterday’s pilau does not tint today’s breakfast. It washes clean with cold water and a cloth rather than needing to be scrubbed, and it does not rust in Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar humidity. The polished surface is what makes the washing-up easy – food lifts off rather than clinging.

Everything travels in a mesh carry bag, and the mesh is more than packaging. On a trip you rarely dry things properly; with a mesh bag you wash up, drop the pieces in, hang it on the outside of a pack and everything is dry by the next stop. In a solid bag the same kit would be packed away wet and stay that way.

The pieces nest, so the full setting takes roughly the space of the plate on its own. It suits solo trekkers on Kilimanjaro and Meru, one-person camping, a permanent kit in a vehicle, or an office desk drawer for anyone who has stopped using disposable plates. For a family, buy one per person – they stack together neatly.

Questions

Good to know

Is this enough for one person or for a couple?

One person. It is a single place setting. For two or more, buy one set each - they nest together and take little extra space.

Will the cup burn my hands with hot tea?

Steel conducts heat, so a full cup of hot tea will be hot to hold at first. Most people give it a minute or hold it by the rim. If you drink hot drinks constantly, an insulated mug is the better companion to this set.

Why a mesh bag rather than a solid one?

Because washing up on a trip rarely ends with everything dry. Mesh lets the kit finish drying in the bag, or hanging off a pack, instead of being sealed away damp.

Will it rust near the coast?

Stainless steel handles Tanzanian coastal humidity well. Rinse off salt water and let the pieces dry in the mesh bag rather than packing them wet.

Is it too heavy for trekking Kilimanjaro?

It is heavier than a plastic set but not by much, and it lasts indefinitely. Plenty of trekkers carry exactly this kind of kit rather than replacing plastic every season.

Can it go in a dishwasher?

Yes, all of it. At home the whole set goes in with the rest of the washing up.

Does it stack with other sets?

Yes - the plates, bowls and cups nest, so buying several for a family still packs compactly.

Do you have these in stock in Dar es Salaam?

We keep them in the Dar es Salaam showroom and ship across Tanzania. Message us with your town for delivery cost and timing.
