About this product

Braided line changed fishing because it does two things monofilament cannot. It is far thinner for the same breaking strain, so you fit much more on a spool and cast much further, and it barely stretches at all, so you feel everything and your hook-set arrives at the fish instead of being absorbed by the line.

The number of strands is what separates one braid from another. A four-strand braid is cheaper and more abrasive; an eight-strand uses eight finer fibres, which braid into a rounder, smoother line. That roundness matters in practice: it lays on the spool more evenly, runs quieter through the guides, and casts further because there is less friction.

The Noeby Infinite X8 uses ultra-high-strength PE fibre imported from Japan. This spool is PE 3.5, rated at 44 lb, on 300 metres. That puts it in heavier inshore and light offshore work – kingfish, trevally, barracuda and small tuna from the rocks, the beach or a boat, and shore jigging along the reef edge.

Two things to know if you are new to braid. It has no stretch and no memory, so tie a proper braid knot – an FG or PR knot to a leader, and a Palomar or uni to terminal tackle – and always run a fluorocarbon or mono leader, both for abrasion resistance and because braid is highly visible in clear water. And back off your drag: with no stretch in the line, the drag is the only shock absorber in the system.

Good to know

What does PE 3.5 mean?

PE is the Japanese line-diameter scale used for braid - a higher number means a thicker line. It describes thickness, not strength, which is why the pound rating is quoted alongside it. This spool is PE 3.5 at 44 lb.

What reel size suits it?

A 4000 to 6000 size spinning reel is the usual match for this line class. The important thing is that the spool is filled to within a couple of millimetres of the lip - an underfilled spool costs you a lot of casting distance.

Do I need a leader?

Yes, almost always. Braid is highly visible in clear water and has poor abrasion resistance against rock and coral. Join two to three metres of fluorocarbon or mono leader with an FG or PR knot. We stock leader material.

Why does 8-strand cost more than 4-strand?

More fibres, finer and more tightly braided. The result is rounder and smoother, so it casts further, runs quieter through the guides and is kinder to your rod guides. A 4-strand of the same rating is more abrasive and noisier.

What knots should I use?

FG or PR knot to join braid to a leader; Palomar or uni knot to tie braid to terminal tackle. Never use a clinch knot with braid - it slips. Wet every knot before pulling it tight.

Should I change my drag setting?

Yes, downwards. Braid has no stretch, so the drag is the only shock absorber in the system. A drag setting that was fine with mono will pull hooks and break leaders with braid.

How long does braid last?

Several seasons if you look after it, far longer than mono. When the first 10 or 20 metres get fluffy from abrasion, cut that off rather than replacing the spool - or reverse the line on the spool to bring the unused end into play.

How do I look after it?

Rinse the reel and line with fresh water after sea use, and let it dry with the drag backed off. Check the first few metres for abrasion after fishing around rock or coral, and cut back to clean line.
