Highlights

The two metres that matter

Braid casts and transmits; fluorocarbon is what the fish actually sees. Almost everyone who fishes braid runs a fluorocarbon leader, and this is what it is for.

100% fluorocarbon

Not a coated nylon - solid fluorocarbon, with the refractive index that makes it hard to see.

Non-absorbent

It does not take on water, so it keeps its strength wet as well as dry.

Abrasion resistant

The property that matters most on a leader fished against coral, rock and teeth.

150 m spool

Enough leader material for a great many rigs - leaders are cut in metres, not tens of metres.

Product description

About this product

Nonsuch Fluorocarbon Fishing Line – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

If you fish braid, you need a leader. Braid is superb at the things it is good at – thin, strong, no stretch – and poor at the two things that matter at the business end: it is very visible in clear water, and it cuts through against coral and rock. A couple of metres of fluorocarbon between the braid and the lure solves both.

Fluorocarbon works because its refractive index is close to that of water. Light passes through it with much less bending than through nylon, so it casts far less of a visible outline underwater. On clear-water fish that have seen a lot of lures, that is a genuine advantage.

It also has properties nylon does not. It is denser than water, so it sinks rather than lying on the surface. It does not absorb water, so it keeps its strength when wet – nylon loses some. And it is markedly more abrasion resistant, which is what you want on the section of line that spends its life against structure and teeth.

This is 100% fluorocarbon rather than a fluorocarbon-coated nylon, on 150 m spools. Since leaders are cut in metres, one spool lasts a long time.

One habit worth acquiring: wet every knot before you pull it tight. Fluorocarbon is stiffer and more brittle than nylon, and friction heat is what makes its knots fail.

Questions

Good to know

Why does fluorocarbon disappear underwater?

Because its refractive index is close to that of water - light passes through it with far less bending than through nylon, so it casts much less of a visible outline. It is not literally invisible, but in clear water it is a real advantage on wary fish.

Why do I need a leader at all?

Braid is very visible in clear water and has poor abrasion resistance against coral, rock and teeth. Two to three metres of fluorocarbon between the braid and the lure gives you invisibility and abrasion resistance where it matters.

How long should my leader be?

Two to three metres for general lure fishing, longer in very clear water and shorter when you need the knot to stay off the reel. For toothy fish such as barracuda and wahoo, add a short wire trace at the lure end.

What knots work with fluorocarbon?

It is stiffer and more brittle than nylon, so wet every knot thoroughly before pulling it tight - friction heat is what makes fluorocarbon knots fail. Use an FG or PR knot to join it to braid, and an improved clinch or uni to terminal tackle.

Does fluorocarbon sink?

Yes - it is denser than water, where nylon monofilament is roughly neutral. That makes it sink faster, which is useful for getting a bait or a lure down, and it means it does not lie on the surface in a visible arc.

Is it the same as fluorocarbon-coated line?

No. This is 100% fluorocarbon throughout. Coated lines have a nylon core with a thin fluorocarbon skin - cheaper, but they absorb water, stretch more, and lose the abrasion resistance once the coating wears.

What breaking strain do I need?

Usually heavier than your braid - a 30 lb braid might carry a 40 to 60 lb leader, because the leader is doing the abrasion work. Tell us what you fish and we will tell you what strengths we have on the shelf.

How do I look after it?

Keep spools out of direct sun and out of a hot car - UV and heat degrade all line. Check the last metre for nicks after fishing rock or coral, and cut back to clean line. Fluorocarbon shows damage as a dull, scuffed patch.
