Highlights

Cross Carbon drag, at Sedona money

The 6000 and 8000 Sedonas get a Cross Carbon drag stack that the smaller sizes do not. It is the part that keeps drag pressure even through a long, hot run.

Cross Carbon drag

Fitted only to the large Sedonas - carbon washers that stay smooth as they heat under a long run.

HAGANE gear

Cold-forged drive gear, so it keeps its smoothness under load instead of wearing loose.

410 m of PE 3

Capacity to let a big fish run and still have line in reserve.

11 kg maximum drag

Enough to hold a kingfish off a reef or turn a Nile perch away from structure.

Product description

About this product

Sedona 8000fi Spinning Reel – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The large Sedonas are quietly the best value in Shimano range, because the 6000 and 8000 get a component the small ones do not: a Cross Carbon drag stack. Carbon washers handle heat far better than felt or plain composite, and heat is what a long run produces. A drag that fades halfway through a fight is how fish are lost, and this is the cheapest Shimano reel that does not have that problem.

Added to that is the cold-forged HAGANE drive gear, which is pressed into shape rather than cut from a blank so the metal grain follows each tooth. It is the reason a Sedona still feels tight after several seasons of hard use when cheaper reels have gone slack.

The 8000 gives you 11 kg of maximum drag, 94 cm of line per crank at 4.9:1, and a spool that holds 410 metres of PE 3 or 275 metres of 0.37 mm mono. The gearing is deliberately low for cranking power, and the large spool diameter keeps the retrieve rate respectable anyway. The handle is 75 mm, long enough for leverage against a load.

The body is graphite rather than metal and there is no formal saltwater sealing, so this is a reel to rinse and dry properly after every sea trip. Do that and it is a genuine workhorse: surf and rock fishing for kingfish, queenfish and trevally, bottom fishing from a boat for snapper and grouper, and Nile perch on Lake Victoria.

Questions

Good to know

What is a Cross Carbon drag and why does it matter?

It is a drag stack built from carbon fibre washers rather than felt or plain composite. Carbon sheds heat far better, so the drag pressure you set at the start of a run is still the pressure you have at the end of it. On a reel this size, fishing fish that run a long way, it is the single most valuable upgrade.

Do the small Sedonas have it too?

No - Shimano fits Cross Carbon only to the 6000 and 8000. It is the main reason the large Sedonas punch above their price.

Is there an FJ version of the 8000?

No. The 6000 and 8000 stayed in the FI generation and were not carried over when Shimano updated the smaller sizes to FJ. Sedona 8000FI is unambiguous.

What rod should I pair it with?

A 9 ft to 11 ft surf or shore rod, or a heavier boat rod. At 615 g it needs a rod with some substance; on a light rod the outfit will feel nose-heavy.

What can I catch with it around Dar es Salaam?

Kingfish, queenfish, trevally and barracuda off the beaches and rocks; snapper, grouper and emperor bottom fishing from a boat. Inland it is a serious Nile perch and catfish reel for Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika.

Is it a saltwater reel?

Shimano gives it no formal SW rating and it is not sealed, but the Cross Carbon drag and the size make it the obvious choice for sea fishing at this price. Rinse and dry it after every trip. For weekly offshore use, step up to the Spheros SW.

Braid or mono?

Braid for casting distance and bite detection off the beach; mono for bottom fishing, where its stretch cushions a sudden lunge near the boat. The spool takes 410 m of PE 3 or 275 m of 0.37 mm mono.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and oil the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips.
