About this product

There is a real line in reel design between freshwater reels that tolerate the sea and reels actually built for it, and the SW series is where Shimano draws it. The Spheros SW carries X-Shield and X-Protect sealing to an IPX8 water-resistance rating, a HAGANE metal body rather than graphite, cold-forged HAGANE gearing, X-SHIP twin-supported pinion, Infinity Drive, and a Cross Carbon drag stack. Every one of those is a response to what salt water and heavy drag actually do to a reel.

The PG suffix means power gear: 4.6:1, the lowest ratio in the range, returning 83 cm per crank. That is a deliberate choice, not a compromise. Low gearing multiplies your cranking torque, which is what you want when you are lifting a fish from 80 metres or working a heavy jig all morning. If you want fast retrieve instead, the 6000HG is the same reel geared at 5.7:1 and 103 cm per crank.

Ten kilos of maximum drag, 440 metres of PE 2 and 450 grams make it the practical size for offshore jigging and popping on this coast, and for serious shore work where you expect to hook something that does not stop.

One thing to know before you buy: the 6000PG is a Japan-domestic model. Shimano sell the 5000XG, 6000HG, 8000HG and larger in the US, Australian and Singapore ranges, but the 6000PG is not among them. It is a genuine Shimano reel, but it arrives through parallel channels, which matters for parts and service. Ask us what we have before you commit.

Good to know

What does IPX8 actually mean?

It is the water-resistance grade Shimano claims for the X-Shield sealing: the reel is protected against continuous immersion rather than just splashes. In practice it means spray, a dunking over the gunwale and a wave over the rocks do not put salt into the gears. It does not mean you can stop rinsing it.

PG or HG - which should I buy?

PG (this reel) if you jig, fish deep, or want maximum cranking torque against a load. HG if you fish surface lures and want fast retrieve. Same body, same drag, same capacity - only the gearing differs.

Why is the 6000PG described as a Japan-domestic model?

Shimano sell different sizes in different regions. The US, Australian and Singapore Spheros SW ranges run 5000XG, 6000HG, 8000HG and larger, with no 6000PG. It is a real Shimano reel but it reaches this market through parallel import, which affects parts and service. Ask us what we have in stock.

What can I use it for around Dar es Salaam?

Offshore jigging and popping on the drop-offs and pinnacles, the Mafia channel and out towards Latham Island - kingfish, GT, dogtooth and yellowfin tuna, amberjack. It is also a strong rock and beach reel for anything that runs hard.

What rod should I pair it with?

A jigging rod for the PG version - our CRONY Amazing or Noeby Voyager blanks suit it - or a heavy shore or popping rod. Load PE 2 to PE 3 braid to match the spool.

What is Infinity Drive?

A Shimano design that supports the spool shaft on a low-friction sleeve, so the reel cranks more easily under heavy drag. You feel it exactly when it matters, which is at the end of a long fight.

Still needs rinsing?

Yes. Sealing keeps salt out of the internals; it does not stop salt drying on the outside, in the bail pivot or on the handle. Rinse gently with fresh water, drain upright, back the drag off, and it will last for many seasons.
