Highlights

One bearing better

Mechanically the Sienna and the FX are twins. The Sienna adds a third ball bearing and Super Stopper II instant anti-reverse - small things you feel every cast.

3+1 bearings

One more ball bearing than the FX, which is what you feel in the smoothness of the retrieve.

8.5 kg maximum drag

Plenty for inshore saltwater and every freshwater fish in the country.

AR-C spool

Shimano's cast-optimised spool lip - the reason these reels cast beyond their price.

Super Stopper II

Instant anti-reverse with no backplay, so a hook-set goes straight into the fish.

Product description

About this product

Spinning Fishing Reel – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

The Sienna sits one rung up from the FX in Shimano’s entry range, and the honest description is that it is the same reel with a third ball bearing. Gear ratio, retrieve rate, drag figure, weight and line capacity are identical. What the extra bearing buys you is a slightly smoother, quieter retrieve – which you notice on a long day and not much on a short one.

What both reels share is the part that matters: Shimano’s spool and body design. The AR-C spool has a lip profile developed on their expensive reels to let line leave in smoother coils, which is genuinely worth casting distance. The G-Free body shifts the centre of mass back towards the rod so the outfit balances properly. Super Stopper II gives instant anti-reverse – no half-turn of slack before the rod loads – which is what puts a hook in on a fast take.

In the 4000 size, that is 8.5 kg of maximum drag, 82 cm of line per crank, and 180 m of 0.30 mm mono or 490 m of PE 1 on the spool. It is the size most people should buy first: enough for snapper, queenfish, barracuda and small trevally inshore, and for anything in the lakes and rivers.

It has no water sealing and no metal body, so it is a reel to rinse and dry after every sea trip. Treat it properly and it lasts; leave it wet and salty in a bag and it will not. Shimano also publish a different set of figures for the Sienna in some regional markets – see the FAQ below.

Buying a Spinning Fishing Reel in Tanzania

361 Degrees Adventure keeps the spinning fishing reel at our showroom in Upanga, Dar es Salaam, with delivery countrywide across Tanzania. Come and handle it before you buy, or order online and collect.

Every spinning fishing reel is checked in store before it leaves us, and our staff use the same kit in the field, so you get an honest answer on fit and sizing rather than a sales pitch.

Not sure which spinning fishing reel suits you? Call or message the showroom and we will talk you through the options that are actually in stock in Dar es Salaam.

Spare parts and replacements for the spinning fishing reel are easier to get here than on an overseas order, which matters once the gear is in use.

Questions

Good to know

Sienna or FX - which should I buy?

Mechanically they are near-identical: same ratio, retrieve, drag, weight and capacity. The Sienna has 3+1 bearings against the FX's 2+1, which makes the retrieve slightly smoother, and it adds Super Stopper II instant anti-reverse. If the price difference is small, take the Sienna.

Why do I see different specifications for the Sienna 4000 elsewhere?

Shimano sells regionally different line-ups under the same model name. The figures on this page are from Shimano's Australia and global site. Shimano's US site lists its Sienna 4000FG at 5.9 kg of drag and 349 g - a different reel wearing the same badge. Ours are the global-specification reels; ask us if you need that confirmed for a particular unit.

What can I catch with a 4000 size reel here?

It is the most useful single size on this coast. Snapper, queenfish, barracuda, small trevally and kingfish from a jetty, the rocks or a boat; catfish, tilapia and Nile perch inland. Pair it with a 7 ft to 9 ft rod.

Can I use it in the sea?

For occasional inshore fishing, yes, provided you rinse it properly. It is not sealed, so it is not the reel for weekly offshore use - look at the Sedona 8000FI or the Spheros SW for that.

What do the letters after the model number mean?

On Shimano spinning reels the two-letter code is drag type plus generation: F = front drag, and the second letter steps forward with each new release (FC, FE, FI, FJ and so on). A C in front of the size means a compact body carrying a larger spool - a C3000 is a 3000 spool on a 2500 body. HG means high gear, XG extra-high gear, PG power gear, and S a shallow spool.

Is the handle reversible?

Yes - it unscrews and fits either side.

How do I look after a reel in salt water?

Rinse it under a gentle spray of fresh water after every sea session - never a hard jet, which drives salt past the seals - then stand it upright to drain and dry. Back the drag right off before storage so the washers are not compressed, and put a drop of reel oil on the handle knob and bail pivot every few trips. Neglected salt is what kills reels here, far more than use does.

Do you deliver outside Dar es Salaam?

Yes, nationwide. Tell us your location and we will quote transport.
