Highlights

Small enough to actually carry

A sewing kit only helps if it is with you. This one is pocket-sized, with folding scissors and a needle threader - the two things that make a small kit usable rather than merely present.

Pocket-sized case

Lives in a handbag or a laptop bag permanently.

Folding scissors

Fold flat into the case instead of demanding their own space.

Needle threader

Threading a fine needle in poor light is the step people give up at.

Threads, buttons, pins, clips

Everything a quick repair needs.

Product description

About this product

The larger cased kit is the better one to keep in a suitcase. This is the one you carry every day, because it fits in a handbag or the pocket of a laptop bag and you stop noticing it.
Two details make a small kit work rather than merely exist. The scissors fold flat, so they take no more room than the case allows rather than dictating its size. And there is a needle threader, which matters more than it sounds – threading a fine needle in a hotel room at night is exactly where people give up and go out with a safety pin instead.
Beyond that it carries needles, a range of thread colours, buttons, pins and clips. Enough for a button, a seam or a hem, which covers nearly everything that goes wrong.
Put it in checked baggage when you fly – small scissors are usually allowed in the cabin but the rule is applied inconsistently and the screener has the last word. And keep the case dry; needles and pins rust fast in coastal air.

Questions

Good to know

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship countrywide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

Can I take the scissors in hand luggage?

Put the kit in checked baggage and you will never have the conversation. Most airlines allow small scissors with blades under about 6 cm in the cabin, but it is applied inconsistently and the screener at the checkpoint has the final word. A confiscated sewing kit is a small loss but an avoidable one.

Does humidity affect a sewing kit?

Steel needles and pins rust in coastal air, particularly stored in a closed case that was put away damp. Keep the case dry, and if the kit lives in a bag that gets wet, open it out and let it air.

Does the heat here affect them?

A car boot in Dar es Salaam gets far hotter than the air outside, and heat both thins liquids and raises pressure inside a closed bottle. Do not leave decanted toiletries in a parked car, and open one slowly if it has been in one.

How much is excess baggage out of Dar es Salaam?

It varies by airline and route, but it is always charged per kilogram at the desk and it is always more than you expect - frequently more than the item you are carrying is worth. Weighing at home is the entire point of a luggage scale.

Will these pass airport security?

Containers of 100 ml or less, all together in one transparent resealable bag of about a litre, taken out separately at the screening point. That is the rule on every airline flying out of Julius Nyerere. Check the printed capacity on each bottle - a part-filled 200 ml bottle is still a 200 ml container and screeners will take it.

How accurate is a hanging luggage scale?

Read the two numbers separately. Display resolution is how finely it reads - often 10 g. Accuracy is how close that reading is to the truth, and on a hanging scale it is realistically within a few hundred grams. That is ample for checking you are under 23 kg. Do not expect it to settle an argument over 50 g.
