The case for a multi-game table is simple and it is a good one: almost nobody has room for a pool table, a table tennis table and an air hockey table, and a family that has to choose one will play one game until they tire of it. Four in a single footprint keeps a games room interesting.

The case against is equally honest, and you should hear it before you buy. Each game on a multi-table is smaller and lighter than a dedicated version. The pool is played on a shorter bed with lighter cushions, the table tennis surface is smaller than regulation, and the air hockey blower is not a commercial one. If you are a serious pool player, this will not replace a proper table – and we would rather tell you that than have you find out.

What it does extremely well is give four genuinely playable games to a household or a small club that would otherwise have one.

Space still matters. Pool needs cue-length clearance to play a shot, and table tennis needs room to step back from the end. A multi-game table in a corner where you cannot get round it is four games you cannot play rather than one.

On climate: these tables are built from MDF and laminate rather than slate, and MDF swells in humidity. Keep it indoors, in a ventilated room away from open windows and rain ingress, and cover it when it is not in use. That matters more here than the instructions will suggest.

What size table should I buy?

Measure the room first, not the table. You need the length of a cue plus a little - about 1.5 m of clear space on every side - or you will be playing awkward shots off the cushion constantly. A 7 ft table needs roughly 4.3 by 3.3 m of room; an 8 ft table needs about 4.7 by 3.5 m. If the room is tight, the smaller table plays far better than a big one you cannot get around.

Is the pool as good as a real pool table?

No, and we would rather say so. The bed is shorter, the cushions are lighter and it is MDF rather than slate. What it is, is genuinely playable - and four playable games beats one good one for most households.

Can I keep it on a veranda?

Not safely. MDF and laminate swell and delaminate in humidity, and a rainy season on a veranda will finish one. Indoors, ventilated, away from open windows, and covered when not in use.

What are the standard ball sizes?

Three sets in common use. American pool uses 57.2 mm (2.25 in) balls. British pub pool uses 50.8 mm (2 in). Snooker uses 52.5 mm. They are not interchangeable - the pockets, the rack and the table are all built around one size, and a set of the wrong balls will not rack or pot properly.

Why does chalk matter so much?

Because a cue tip on a ball is a low-friction contact, and without chalk it slips. A miscue - where the tip skids off the ball instead of gripping - is almost always a chalk problem rather than a technique one. Chalk before every shot where you are not hitting dead centre, and brush it on rather than grinding it into the tip.

How much space do I actually need?

Enough to swing a cue on every side for the pool, and room to step back from each end for the table tennis. About 1.5 m clear around the table is the realistic figure. A table in a corner is four games you cannot play.

How important is levelling?

It is the single thing that determines whether a table plays properly. A ball rolling off line on a slow shot is a table out of level, not a player at fault. Check it with a spirit level in several places across the bed, and re-check after the table has been moved or after a long damp spell. Most tables have adjustable feet.
