This is the hat for the days when the sun is genuinely hard work – a long morning fishing, a day on a boat, walking in open country with no shade for hours. It has a wide three-dimensional brim, and a detachable panel that drops down over the face and neck for full coverage.

The detachable part is what makes it practical rather than extreme. With the cover on you are protected from essentially every angle, including reflected light off water, which is the sun most people underestimate. Unclip it and you have a normal wide-brimmed sun hat for walking back to the vehicle or sitting in the shade. One hat, two quite different jobs.

Keeping full-coverage headwear bearable in Tanzanian heat comes down to airflow, and that is handled with mesh side panels so air moves through the crown rather than heat building underneath. The fabric is a polyester and spandex blend – soft, light and with enough stretch to sit comfortably rather than gripping. An adjustable windproof cord keeps the whole thing on your head in an open vehicle, on a boat or on an exposed ridge.

How does the face cover attach?

It clips on and off, so you can fit it when the sun is hard and remove it when you do not need it. Both parts are designed to be used separately.

Can I see properly with the cover on?

Yes - it is made to be worn while working, fishing or walking. It shades rather than blocks, though as with any face cover your peripheral view is reduced compared with an open hat.

Is it too hot with the cover on?

The mesh side panels are there specifically for that. Air moves through the crown rather than heat building underneath, which is what makes full-coverage hats wearable in this climate.

Is it unisex?
