This is the bag in the range that carries a laptop. It has a dedicated padded computer compartment, which is the difference between a backpack you can take to work and one you can only take on holiday.
The back panel is contoured rather than flat. On a ten-minute walk that is imperceptible; across a day of moving between meetings, or a long transit at an airport, it is the reason the bag does not leave your shoulders aching. The handle at the top is padded too, for the times you carry it by hand through a queue.
The USB socket on the outside runs to a cable inside the bag. Put your own power bank in, plug it in, and you can charge a phone from the outside without unzipping. There is no battery supplied and none built in – the socket is a pass-through and nothing more.
The fabric is oxford with a polyester lining. It is water-resistant, so it handles a shower between a car and a building, and it dries quickly afterwards. It is not sealed and the zips are open, so in serious rain the contents want their own plastic bag. Empty it and let it dry properly after a wet day – a lined bag put away damp in this climate will smell within a week.

Good to know

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and ship countrywide to Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, Zanzibar and the rest of Tanzania.

Does the USB port charge my phone by itself?

No, and this is the thing people get wrong most often. The port is a pass-through cable, not a battery. You put your own power bank inside the bag, plug it into the internal end, and the external socket lets you charge without opening the bag. With no power bank inside, the port does nothing at all.

Will a laptop fit?

Only in the backpack, which has a padded computer compartment. The chest and crossbody bags are sized for a phone, a wallet, keys, a power bank and a small tablet at most. Check the dimensions in the table against your device before ordering.

Is it waterproof?

Water-resistant, which is not the same thing. The fabric sheds a shower and a splash. The zips are not sealed and the seams are not taped, so a Dar es Salaam downpour in April will get in if you stand in it long enough. Anything that must stay dry goes in a plastic bag inside.

Can I use it as a personal item on a flight?

A chest or crossbody bag of this size is comfortably within the personal item allowance on every airline flying out of Julius Nyerere. The backpack is close to the limit on some carriers - check your airline if you plan to carry it in addition to a cabin bag.

Do anti-theft features actually work?

Will it go mouldy in this humidity?

It can, if it is put away damp. Nylon and oxford fabric do not rot, but the coating and anything organic inside will grow mould in a closed cupboard on the coast. Empty it, let it dry in moving air, and store it somewhere that breathes.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and mild soap and let it dry out of direct sun. Do not machine wash it - the tumbling destroys the coating and any electronics pass-through, and the padding never dries evenly.
