Fishing gloves have a design problem: the things that make hands vulnerable – sun, line, hooks, fish spines – argue for covering them, and the things you actually do with your hands – tie knots, handle small hooks, feel line – argue against. The three-finger cut is the accepted compromise. Thumb, index and middle finger are open, so you can tie an FG knot or pick up a size 6 hook; the rest of the hand, and crucially the back of it, stays covered.
That back-of-hand coverage is worth more than most people think. The backs of the hands take direct sun all day, they are almost never sunscreened properly, and they are one of the commonest sites of cumulative sun damage in anyone who works or plays outdoors. UPF 50+ fabric blocks over 98 per cent of the UV and does not wear off.
The palm is non-slip, which is the other half of the job: a wet rod butt and a wet cork or EVA grip are slippery, and a glove that does not grip is worse than no glove. The quick-release system means you can get them off fast when you genuinely need bare hands.
The fabric is breathable and high-stretch, so they fit snugly without restricting the hand – which is what makes it possible to wear them all day rather than taking them off after an hour.
