Highlights

Short spool, heavy duty

Fifty metres is a leader spool - you cut leaders in metres, not tens of metres, so a short spool of the right strength is more useful than a long one of the wrong one.

0.34 mm diameter

A heavy leader diameter for real abrasion resistance against coral and teeth.

Fast sinking

High specific gravity, so it sinks rather than lying in a visible arc on the surface.

Low stretch

High tension and good bite transmission, so you feel what the lure or bait is doing.

6 lb to 65 lb available

The range covers light freshwater leaders through to serious saltwater work.

Product description

About this product

A leader spool is a different thing from a main-line spool. You use leader in metres – two or three at a time – so fifty metres is a great many leaders, and it is far more useful to own the right strength on a short spool than the wrong one on a long one.

This is a carbon line with a fluorocarbon coating, which gives it the properties a leader needs. It has a high specific gravity, so it sinks quickly rather than lying on the surface in a visible arc. It is abrasion resistant, which is what the leader is there for – it is the section that lives against coral, rock and teeth. It has low stretch, so bite transmission through it is good. And the fluorocarbon coating keeps water out, so the line performs the same wet as dry.

This spool is 0.34 mm, which is a substantial diameter – a leader for real fish rather than for finesse work. The range runs from 6 lb to 65 lb.

Wet every knot before you pull it tight. Fluorocarbon and fluorocarbon-coated lines are stiffer and more brittle than nylon, and friction heat during the tightening is the usual reason their knots fail.

Questions

Good to know

Is this the same as 100% fluorocarbon?

Not quite. This is a carbon line with a fluorocarbon coating; our Nonsuch spool is 100% fluorocarbon throughout. Coated lines cost less and perform well; solid fluorocarbon keeps its properties longer as the surface wears.

Why does fluorocarbon disappear underwater?

Because its refractive index is close to that of water - light passes through it with far less bending than through nylon, so it casts much less of a visible outline. It is not literally invisible, but in clear water it is a real advantage on wary fish.

Does fluorocarbon sink?

Yes - it is denser than water, where nylon monofilament is roughly neutral. That makes it sink faster, which is useful for getting a bait or a lure down, and it means it does not lie on the surface in a visible arc.

Why only 50 metres?

Because leader is used in metres. Two to three metres per leader means a 50 m spool gives you fifteen to twenty leaders, which is a season for most people. Buying the right strength matters far more than buying length.

What knots work with fluorocarbon?

It is stiffer and more brittle than nylon, so wet every knot thoroughly before pulling it tight - friction heat is what makes fluorocarbon knots fail. Use an FG or PR knot to join it to braid, and an improved clinch or uni to terminal tackle.

What strength should I use?

Usually heavier than your main line, because the leader does the abrasion work. A 30 lb braid might carry a 40 to 60 lb leader. Tell us what you fish and we will tell you what strengths are on the shelf.

Can I use it as a main line?

You can, and some anglers do for bottom fishing. It is stiffer than nylon and has more memory, so it is less pleasant to cast with, but its sink rate and abrasion resistance suit fishing hard on the bottom.

How do I look after it?

Keep spools out of direct sun and out of a hot car - UV and heat degrade all line. Check the last metre for nicks after fishing rock or coral, and cut back to clean line. Fluorocarbon shows damage as a dull, scuffed patch.
