About this product
A mouthpiece is a consumable. Silicone hardens slowly with sun, salt and ozone, and a hard mouthpiece stops conforming to your bite – so you clamp it instead, and your jaw aches for the rest of the day. It is also the part most likely to tear, always at the barrel where it grips the regulator, and always on the boat rather than at home.
This is a soft silicone replacement in the standard pattern, so it fits most regulator second stages and most snorkels: the barrel slides over the mouthpiece stub and is held with a cable tie or the original clamp. Check your own equipment before ordering, since a few manufacturers use a proprietary fitting.
Changing one takes a minute. Cut the old cable tie, work the old mouthpiece off the barrel, warm the new one in hot water for a few seconds if it is stiff, push it fully home so the barrel is seated all the way round, and fit a new cable tie with the head positioned underneath where it will not press into your lip. Trim the tie flush.
Use it properly once it is on. The teeth rest on the bite tabs; the seal is made by the lips. Divers who bite hard do it out of anxiety, and the answer is not a harder bite but a relaxed jaw and a properly seated mouthpiece. If it still pulls at your mouth, a slightly different shape may suit your bite better – mouthpieces are personal.
Keep a spare. A torn mouthpiece is the single commonest thing that ends someone-s diving day, it costs almost nothing, and it takes up no room in a kit bag.
