About this product

A dive torch is not just a night-diving tool. Water absorbs light by wavelength, starting with red: at 5 metres red is already dull, at 10 it is brown, and by 20 metres everything is blue-grey. Shine a torch on the same reef and the colour comes straight back. Most of what people find disappointing about photographs from a daylight dive is this, and a torch is the answer.

It is also how you see into anything. Overhangs, crevices, the underside of a wreck, the gap under a coral head – the interesting things on a reef are usually in shadow, and on a bright day your eyes will not adjust into them. A narrow beam does.

This one uses a T6-class LED with three modes: full output for looking into holes, low output to stretch the battery over a long dive, and strobe for signalling on the surface or in poor visibility. The body is aluminium and ABS – aluminium carries heat away from the LED and takes the knocks, ABS where weight and impact resistance matter more. At 35 mm across and 145 mm long it weighs 121 g and clips easily to a BCD D-ring.

The IPX8 rating means it is sealed for continuous immersion, and the seals are the part that needs attention. Every dive torch that floods, floods because an O-ring was dry, gritty, or pinched when the cap was screwed down. Check the ring, keep it lightly greased with silicone, and make sure nothing is trapped under it before you close it.

It runs on either a rechargeable cell or three AAA batteries with the supplied holder, which is genuinely useful away from a reliable power supply – out at Mafia, Kilwa or on a boat for several days, AAA cells from any shop will keep it running.

Good to know

Why do I need a torch on a daylight dive?

Because water strips out colour with depth, red first. By 10 metres a red fish looks brown and by 20 everything is blue-grey. A torch restores the colour and lights the overhangs and crevices where most of the interesting life sits.

What does IPX8 mean?

It means the torch is sealed for continuous immersion rather than just splashing. Manufacturers state a depth against that rating - if you dive deep, check what depth the manufacturer specifies for this model before relying on it at the limit.

What are the three modes for?

High for looking into holes and lighting a subject, low to make the batteries last through a long dive or a surface swim, and strobe for signalling - on the surface to a boat, or underwater to a buddy in poor visibility.

Why did my dive torch flood?

Almost always an O-ring. They flood because the ring was dry, had grit or sand on it, or was pinched when the cap was tightened. Check and lightly grease the O-rings with silicone before each trip and wipe them clean before closing.

Can I use ordinary AAA batteries?

Yes, with the supplied holder, which is the practical option when you are away from power for days. A rechargeable cell gives longer runtime and more consistent output, so most divers carry both.

Can I use it for snorkelling and night swims?

Yes. It is a useful thing for a night snorkel, and worth having on any boat as a waterproof torch that keeps working when a normal one has died.

How do I look after it?

Rinse in fresh water after every sea dive with the cap closed, and press the switch a few times under the fresh water to flush salt out of it. Dry it, then store it with the cap slightly loose and the batteries out so the seals are not compressed and a leaking cell cannot ruin it.
