The mask uses a wide-vision impact-resistant safety lens with a UV protective coating, sealed with a soft rim and held by a fully adjustable head strap. Note that this generation uses an impact-resistant lens rather than tempered glass – it takes a knock better and weighs less, but it will scratch more readily than glass, so keep it away from sand and do not pack it loose with fins.
The snorkel has a soft mouthpiece and a blow-out valve at the base, so water that gets in drains below the mouth and clears with one sharp exhale. Rest the teeth on the bite tabs and seal with your lips; biting down is what leaves your jaw aching after a long swim.
The fins are open-heel with adjustable straps, sized EU 41-46 (US 8-12), and have flow channels moulded into the blade. Those channels guide water along the length of the blade instead of letting it spill off the edges, which is what turns leg effort into forward movement. Open-heel fins are also far more forgiving on sizing than full-foot ones, and they can be worn with a thin neoprene sock on a long swim to stop the strap rubbing.
Over the reef at Mbudya, Bongoyo or anywhere off Zanzibar, fins change the experience completely – you cover ground without effort, hold position against a light current, and get back to the boat without a fight. They are the piece most beginners skip and the one that makes the biggest difference.
