Adjustable Soft Padded Headguard - Adults

Rugby & American Football

An adjustable soft padded rugby headguard for adult players. It reduces cuts, grazes and cauliflower ear, and cushions knocks from the ground and studs. It does not prevent concussion - no headguard does, and we would rather say so plainly than let anyone believe otherwise.

Product description

About this product

Adjustable Soft Padded Headguard – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.

A soft padded rugby headguard with adjustable fitting, sized for adult players.

We want to be straight about what this does before describing anything else, because headguards are one of the most commonly misrepresented items in sport.

What a soft headguard does: it reduces cuts, grazes and lacerations to the scalp, and it substantially reduces cauliflower ear – the auricular haematoma that comes from repeated friction in the scrum and the ruck. For a front-row forward, that is the reason to wear one. It also cushions knocks from the ground, from studs, and from knees and elbows.

What it does not do: prevent concussion. Concussion happens when the brain moves inside the skull under rapid acceleration and rotation, and a few millimetres of foam on the outside of the skull does not meaningfully change that. No soft headguard on the market is designed or tested to prevent it. If a player takes a blow to the head and shows any sign of concussion, they come off and follow the recognise-and-remove protocol, headguard or not.

There is one more thing worth saying, particularly for a child’s headguard. There is a well-documented effect where players who feel protected take more risk – tackling higher, or leading with the head. A headguard that changes how a young player tackles has made them less safe. It protects the skin; it does not change what is safe to do with your head.

On fit: snug enough not to rotate when the head is shaken, ears fully covered, chin strap firm. Check it at the start of every session, because straps loosen with sweat and use.

One note on approval: under World Rugby Regulation 12, headgear worn in a match must be an approved item. We have not been given approval documentation for this headguard and we do not state one. Ask us before buying if you need it for sanctioned play.

Questions

Good to know

Does a headguard prevent concussion?

No. No headguard does, and any product claiming otherwise is misleading you. Concussion happens when the brain moves inside the skull under rapid acceleration and rotation, and a few millimetres of foam on the outside of the skull does not meaningfully reduce that movement. If a player takes a blow to the head and shows any sign of concussion, they come off and follow the recognise-and-remove protocol - headguard or not.

So what does a headguard actually do?

It reduces cuts, grazes and lacerations to the scalp and ears, and it substantially reduces cauliflower ear - the ear damage that comes from repeated friction in the scrum and the ruck. For a front-row forward that is the main reason to wear one. It also cushions knocks from the ground, studs, knees and elbows.

Could wearing one make a player less safe?

It can, and this is worth saying. There is a well-documented behavioural effect where players who feel protected take more risk - tackling higher, or leading with the head. A headguard that changes how someone tackles has made them less safe, not more. It protects the skin. It does not change what is safe to do with your head.

How should it fit?

Snug enough not to move when the head is shaken, with the ears fully covered and the chin strap firm but not tight. A headguard that rotates in contact is doing nothing. Adjust it at the start of every session - straps loosen with use and sweat.

When should it be replaced?

When the foam has compressed, hardened or split, or when the straps have stretched. Compressed foam does not absorb impact. In this heat foam ages faster than the manufacturer would assume, so check it at the start of each season rather than waiting for it to look obviously finished.

Is it approved for match play?

Under World Rugby Regulation 12, headgear worn in a match must be an approved item meeting the relevant standard. We have not been provided with approval documentation for this headguard, so we do not state one - ask us before buying if you need it for sanctioned play and we will check with the supplier.

How do I keep it clean in this climate?

Wash it by hand in cool water with mild soap after heavy sessions and air-dry it out of direct sun. Sweat-soaked foam in Dar humidity turns unpleasant fast, and the salt degrades the fabric. Never leave it sealed in a kit bag overnight.

Do you deliver in Dar es Salaam?

Yes. We deliver across Dar es Salaam and send nationwide to Arusha, Moshi, Mwanza, Dodoma, Zanzibar and beyond by courier. Call or WhatsApp us if you need a same-day drop in the city.
