About this product
Mouth Guard with Strap – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Tanzania.
A mouthguard with a retaining strap, for rugby, boxing, hockey and any contact sport.
A mouthguard is the single most effective piece of protective equipment for the teeth, lips, gums and jaw in contact sport, and the maths behind that is simple: a knocked-out adult tooth does not grow back, and the lifetime cost of restoring one is many times the price of a mouthguard. It also cushions the lower jaw against the upper, which reduces the risk of jaw fracture and of teeth cutting through the lip or tongue.
One claim we will not make: that a mouthguard prevents concussion. The evidence for that is not established, whatever some packaging says. Mouthguards are proven for dental and oral-facial protection, and that is a good enough reason on its own.
The strap is a practical feature rather than a protective one – it tethers the guard to a helmet or lets it hang when it is out of the mouth, so it does not end up in the mud or lost between sessions.
Fitting is boil-and-bite and it is worth doing properly. Trim the back edge with scissors first if it is long enough to make you gag. Boil water, take it off the heat, let it stand thirty seconds, then immerse the guard for the time the packet states – usually twenty to forty-five seconds, and do not guess, because over-boiling leaves it too soft to hold a shape. Lift it out, shake off the water, dip it briefly in cool water so it does not burn, then seat it on the upper teeth and bite down firmly while sucking hard and pressing the outside into the gums with your fingers and tongue. Hold twenty to thirty seconds, then plunge it into cold water to set.
It should stay in place with your mouth open, without clenching. Most guards can be reheated and refitted once or twice if the first attempt is loose.
