Grip is the whole point

A composite cover built for hand feel, not for a stadium.

Super Grip composite cover

Wilson's grip-focused surface, which is what separates it from the entry recreational balls.

Butyl rubber bladder

Holds air far longer than latex, which is what you want on a ball that lives in a garage.

NFL licensed, not a game ball

Genuinely Wilson and genuinely licensed. The game ball is the Horween leather Duke.

Official and Junior sizes

Check which you are buying. An official ball is wrong for a nine-year-old.

About this product

Nfl Super Grip Football – in stock at 361 Degrees Adventure in Dar es Salaam.

Wilson’s NFL Super Grip, code WF30035 – a recreational American football with a composite cover.

Wilson and the NFL have the longest official ball partnership in sport, together on the field since 1941, and every point ever scored in the NFL has been scored with a Wilson football. That is worth knowing, and so is the distinction that follows from it: the actual game ball is The Duke, hand-made from Horween leather in Ada, Ohio, and Wilson themselves note that balls used in NFL games may have specifications and tolerances even the retail Duke does not. The Super Grip is an officially licensed recreational ball. Genuinely Wilson, genuinely licensed, and not a game ball – and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something else.

What it actually is, is a well-made throwing and catching ball. The Super Grip composite cover is Wilson’s grip-focused surface and the reason this model exists – composite grips better in the wet than leather and needs no breaking in. The bladder is butyl rubber, which holds air far longer than latex: relevant for a ball that spends most of its life in a garage between weekends.

It comes in Official and Junior sizes, and choosing the right one matters more than anything else on this page. Wilson’s guide: Official for ages 14 and up, Junior for ages 9 to 12.

Inflate to 12.5 to 13.5 psi, and wet the needle before it goes in.

Questions

Good to know

Is this the ball the NFL plays with?

No, and it is worth being precise. The NFL game ball is Wilson's The Duke, made from Horween leather by hand in Ada, Ohio - and Wilson note that even the retail Duke may differ from the balls used in games. The MVP and Super Grip are officially licensed recreational balls with composite covers. Licensed, genuinely Wilson, and not game balls.

What size should I buy?

Wilson's own guide: Official size for high school, college and ages 14 and up. Youth size for seventh and eighth grade, ages 12 to 14. Junior size for fourth to sixth grade, ages 9 to 12. Pee Wee for the youngest organised level. An official-size ball in the hands of a ten-year-old is the fastest way to put them off the sport.

What pressure should an American football be?

The NFL specification is 12.5 to 13.5 psi, and that is a sensible guide for an official-size recreational ball too. Wet the needle before you insert it - a drop of water or valve oil - because a dry needle tears the valve and a torn valve cannot be repaired.

Composite or leather?

These are composite cover balls. Composite is a synthetic material - grippier when wet, more consistent, more durable, and much cheaper than leather. Genuine leather is what the NFL game ball uses and it needs breaking in and looking after. For recreational play, composite is the better choice, and we call it composite rather than leather because that is what it is.

Any tips for using a pump needle?

Wet the needle before you put it in - a drop of water, glycerine or valve oil is enough. A dry needle tears the rubber valve as it goes in, and a torn valve means a ball that will not hold air and cannot be repaired. This is the single commonest way people ruin a new ball.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat raises the pressure inside an inflated ball, so a ball pumped in the cool morning and left on a sunlit pitch is harder by the afternoon - inflate toward the lower end of the range. UV degrades stitching, PU covers and net twine, so keep balls and nets out of prolonged direct sun when they are not in use. And dry kit properly rather than sealing it damp in a bag.

How should I look after a ball?

Deflate it slightly if it is going into storage for a long time, so the bladder and seams are not under constant tension. Wipe mud off rather than leaving it to dry on, because grit works into the seams. Keep it out of prolonged sun, and never leave it in a car boot. Check the pressure before every session rather than once a month.
