Gilbert’s G-TR4000 in Sky, size 5 – the hand-stitched training ball they build for club, school, junior and mini players.

The feature that matters is TRI grip: Gilbert’s patented triangular surface pattern rather than the conventional pimpled rubber everyone else uses. They developed it to put more surface area in contact with the hand, and they state that extensive testing showed it to be significantly more durable than a traditional training ball surface. On a ball that will be handled several hundred times a session, durability of the grip pattern is the specification that actually determines how long it stays useful.

Gilbert have made rugby balls since 1823 and are the official ball of the Rugby World Cup, which is worth knowing when you are choosing between a training ball from them and a cheaper one from nobody in particular.

It is worth being clear about training versus match. A match ball – Gilbert’s Kinetica, for instance – gets a flight-tuned valve and is pre-kicked at the factory to guarantee its behaviour off the tee. A training ball does not. It is entirely legal for club and school play; it is simply not the ball a referee reaches for on a fixture day.

Inflate to 9.5 to 10 psi. That is far softer than a football, and inflating a rugby ball to football pressure is the commonest way people ruin one.

What is a training ball, as opposed to a match ball?

A training ball is built for grip, abrasion resistance and cost over a season of handling drills. A match ball is tuned and pre-kicked for flight and place-kicking accuracy. A training ball is perfectly legal for club and school play; it is simply not what a referee would choose for a fixture.

What is TRI grip?

Gilbert's patented triangular surface grip pattern. They developed it to give more surface contact with the hand than a conventional pimple pattern, and they describe it as significantly more durable than a traditional training ball surface.

What are the size 5 dimensions?

A size 5 football is 68 to 70 cm in circumference and 410 to 450 g at the start of a match - the senior ball, for ages 13 and up. A size 5 rugby ball is a different thing entirely: 280 to 300 mm long, 740 to 770 mm long circumference, 410 to 460 g, and it takes only 9.5 to 10 psi. Do not inflate a rugby ball to football pressure.

What pressure should a rugby ball be?

9.5 to 10 psi, which is 0.67 to 0.70 kg per square centimetre under World Rugby Law 2. That is considerably softer than a football, and inflating a rugby ball to football pressure is a common and damaging mistake.

Does it come inflated?

Gilbert do not state either way, and rugby balls are commonly shipped deflated or part-inflated. Check it on arrival and pump it to 9.5 to 10 psi before playing.

Any tips for using a pump needle?

Wet the needle before you put it in - a drop of water, glycerine or valve oil is enough. A dry needle tears the rubber valve as it goes in, and a torn valve means a ball that will not hold air and cannot be repaired. This is the single commonest way people ruin a new ball.

How does the climate here affect equipment?

Heat raises the pressure inside an inflated ball, so a ball pumped in the cool morning and left on a sunlit pitch is harder by the afternoon - inflate toward the lower end of the range. UV degrades stitching, PU covers and net twine, so keep balls and nets out of prolonged direct sun when they are not in use. And dry kit properly rather than sealing it damp in a bag.
